What are the abbreviations you guys use?

Post by barbosa003 »

Just got the game last night. And I've been through quite a lot of this forum. But I still haven't figured out what SE means? And there's a lot of abbreviations used in the forums, could someone list them here for us noobs? I've gone through the FAQ and can't seem to find such a thread.

SE means Special Elite, a bonus unit that you get for free and doesn't use a CORE slot.
For other abbreviations list them here and we'll post the meanings.

A freebie: PzC - Panzer Corps

Thanks
AC = Allied Corps as explained already by captainjack
VC = no idea .. could you supply a context in which it was used? That could help. It could be possibly Victory Condition but i haven't really seen it abbreviated much.
HA = Hard Attack
FA = again no idea .. could you supply a context in which it was used? That could help here too
AR = the only thing i can possibly associate with AR would be After Action Report but its usually abbreviated AAR.

Generally supplying the context for the abbreviations tends to help immensly. At least my brain seems to associate them a lot better as if they are supplied alone. :)

Thanks Tarrack (and you others), but I'm not bothered to go back again for the third time to see where these are.

Very true for me as well! And I've think found the sources for some of the unknowns:

viewtopic.php?f=121&t=29134&start=40#p315178

and:

viewtopic.php?f=121&t=42221#p398092

VC - Victory Conditions?
FA - as used in the post above I guess it means Field Artillery
AR - ?

A list of abbreviations/shorthands I often use:

SE - Special Elite / Special Equipment
PzC - Panzer Corps
AK - Afrika Korps
AC - Allied Corps
GC - Grand Campaign. There are 10 different ones, spread over West or East front, each with years. Two examples: GC'42 East, GC'44 West.
DLC - Downloadable Content, usually refers to GC's
MegaPack - DLC bundle that contains every GC

DV - Decisive Victory (is called Triumph in AC)
MV - Marginal Victory (is called Victory in AC)

AI - artificial intelligence, in this case the programmed computer opponent
exp - experience
FM - field marshall (difficulty level)
lvl - level
pr - prestige
RNG - random number generator
star(s) - how many experience a unit has, for example a '2-star Panzer'
str - strength points (normal units have 10 str)
VH - victory hex (hexes which are the primary targets in a scenario)

move - movement rate
spot - spotting
INI - initiative
SA - soft attack
HA - hard attack
AA - air attack
NA - naval attack
GD - ground defense
AD - air defense
CD - close defense
RoF - rate of fire

And now a very random category, I've seen these pop up sometimes:

AAA (or AA) - anti aircraft artillery
AAR - after action report
ASAP - as soon as possible
AT - antitank
Arty - artillery
Bf - Bf109 fighter plane
cav - cavalry
ETA - estimated time of arrival
Fj - Fallschirmjäger = German paratroopers
Flak - German abbreviation for anti-aircraft gun, can either mean AAA or more specifically the famous 88mm gun
FW - FW190 fighter plane
Gj - Gebirgsjäger (mountain infantry)
Krad - Kradschützen (motorcycle infantry)
inf - infantry
JS - Soviet IS tank
KV - Soviet KV-1 tank
lvl bomber - level bomber
Marder - family of German tracked anti-tank units
MG - machinegun
Nebelwerfer - German rocket artillery
PaK - German abbreviation for antitank gun
para(s) - paratrooper(s)
PG - Panzer General
Pz - usually with Arabic/Roman numerals, to refer to German tank (panzer) type. For example: PzIV, Pz3
recon - reconnaissance (scout units)
SdKfz - 'special motor vehicle', usually used in the forums to refer to the German halftracks
SPAAG - self-propelled anti-aircraft gun
SPAT - self-propelled antitank gun
SPW - German halftrack for transporting infantry
strat bomber - strategic bomber
StuG - Sturmgeschütz (tracked assault gun)
Stuka - divebomber, usually refers to the famous Junkers 87

Ok, thanks. Most of those I knew. Been studying WWII since the late 60's (and no, that isn't a typo). It was things like AD (for example)...now I know what you guys meant, but I know it as AA or FlaK.

ThvN's list is pretty comprehensive.
A few extras:
standard Panzer Corps is often known as Vanilla
Mods are user modifications. These vary from reasonably simple - adding an extra unit or slightly changing the properties of a few units - custom scenarios for single and multiplayer use and through to major campaigns (Legacy of Versailles, World War 1 spring to mind) that provide many many hours of extra play.
GME is the Generic Mod Enabler, a program that helps enable and disable mods.
Also, from my Nethack days, RNG can also refer to the more personal and malevolent Random Number Gods, who have a personal dislike of the player and show this at critical moments through allocating unfavourable rolls.
