Melee Overlap Question

Post by mdoolitt »

Hi. We had a situation last night that raised a question.

RRRR
RRRR EEEE

R=Romans, E=Carthage elephants
The Romans on the left are facing down, the other two units are in melee

One side felt that for the Romans on the left to join in the melee, they would have to turn 90 degrees and charge in the next turn.

The other side felt that, as the distance was less than half a base width, the leftmost Roomans could slide over and add themselves in as an overlap.

The situation was complicated by the fact that the left Romans would have to slide sideways and *backwards* and few millimeteres; the diagram in the only shows a unit sliding sideways and *forwards*.

In the end we decided that they could slide over and add themselves as an overlap. Did we do this correctly?

the diagram is confusing me a bit..

if the aim was somthing like this

Code: Select all

     RRRR
RRRR EEEE
then there is no need to shift back because believe that side edge to side edge with an enemy base that is already in combat with an enemmy on its front edge already qualifies as overlap. If you read with full attention the overlap definitions it clarifies when you can add as overlap and when you need to charge

To take this a step further if I understand the rule correctly the overlapping BG could be even further forward to the point where it is just in side to side contact but with the rear left portion ( not just corner to corner) of its flank and it would still be considered overlapping. That was a nuance I missed the first few times through the rules.
