Why no Naval elements?

Post by Vorkosigan5 »

A question - pure curiosity

Why are there no naval/ water based elements available.

I only ask because my wonderful medieval ships are now doomed to lie in their boxes........

Also, if naval/water doesn't play any part, why is "coast" a terrain choice?

But naval contingents rarely took part in land battles, but if rules allow them they often do - far more often than historically justifiable.

Naval will be covered in our future campaign supplement.

Coasts are allowed because coasts often did take part in land battles.

Coasts narrow the battlefield and protect one flank from an outflanking march - two strategies some armies might find useful to employ.

They will be part of a campaign supplement. In reality they were most used for transproting and supplying armies and for fighting amongst themselves to gain control of the seas.

Because it is Field of Glory, not Sea of Glory

Most of the sea battles involved either raming the enemy or drawing up alongside and boarding.
In the case of boarding parties, the ships upper decks become a small battlefield. I will try to find a site that has deck plans for the various navies.

It will be a goodly time to market so don't get over-excited ....

but I did my first solo naval test game last week complete with ramming (IMPACT) and boarding (MELEE)

Early days but fun :-)

To caution any throughts on land/sea combined forces this period is far far from D Day esque actions.

Looking back through history there are very few examples of true naval/lan interaction that I could find.

In fact it would be great if all of you could use this stream to post any firm examples that you know of with any suitable links as they would be of interest to us.

Greetings

From immediate off the top of the head thoughts.

1. Troy - in D Day terms it's only 'Funny' was a WVGI (Wooden Vehicle Greeks Inside).
2. Marathon 490 BC - although in the battle the ships could be a camp - Mykale was an assault on the camp so probably wouldn't count
3. Sphacteria
4. Sicily 415 BC
4. A number of relatively small operations referred to in Xenophon's Hellenica
5. One of Caesar's landings in Britain

On a side note I see there is a book/paper called A Study of Ancient Roman Amphibious and Offensive Sea-Ground Task Force Operations (Mellen) but the price looks excessive.

Thapsus featured ships assisting their side by shooting, and attempting (and failing) to land troops.

It's definitely the exception rather than the rule, though.
