Steam Version Wont Start

Hello i have Wins Vista with Nvidia 8400GS desktop. Im trying to reinstall it for the third time. I havent installed the latest 8000 drivers because my computer says the version im using is up to date and everyone says you shouldnt have to keep installing drivers as it would upset other software or games. Surely this game doesnt need such up to date drivers? The last time i installed it i pressed the start up button and nothing happens. I have installed the Microsoft Redist 2012 and the AL open and nothing has happened. I will try it later on my laptop that has wins 8. I had trouble with the WW1 Centennial game as well but it worked on my laptop alright. These games seem to have issues with Wins Vistas hope for any advice thanks.

Hello ive just downloaded it onto my laptop that uses wins 8 with intel graphic card with 8 GB Ram and surprisingly I have no trouble running it. I saw the AL open file being installed as the game started up. I agree it might be my graphic card drivers aren't up to date on my desktop computer or maybe it doesn't work on Wins Vistas. I am not sure if its safe to update my drivers unless the computer asks for it in case it upsets other computer software. Let me know what you think thanks.

We need a DxDiag report file and the game log.


How to get a Directx Dialog file:

1. click on "START"
2. click "run"
3. type in "dxdiag" and click "OK"
4. check through the tabs and perform all tests
5. click "Save all Information..." and save the text file to a location of your choice
6. open the text file, copy the contents, and post along with your issue.


How to get the ctgw.log file:

If you ever get an error or crash, please attach the ctgw.log file to your report, this will help us identify the problem. It's more useful if the error is during the AI turn, but it would be good for you guys to get used to uploading these logs. The logs are in your Documents, so the default is "My Documents\My Games\Commander The Great War"

Even if you're reporting a bad move by the AI, it would be helpful to see the log as this gives us a much clearer idea of what was going on when the issue occurred.

IMPORTANT: This log is overwritten every time you start the game. Please make a copy of the log after any crash/bug you want to report before reloading the game.

Hello thanks for your reply. I will try and do the dxdiag if i can. But the game log i cant do at all as the game is completely dead. I press the start button on the opening screen and nothing happens so i wont be able to do that. It seems like to me the game wont work in Vistas windows the same with WW1 Centennial game as well. Its working alright on my laptop with wins 8 and intel graphic card. I ll try and send the dxdiag file soon.

Hello i tried to use your support address you gave me but it doesnt seem to work. I think i will have to leave it for now as a lot of other people have problems with this game and see what happens later on. At least i have it up and running on my laptop. To be honest my computer is getting on and theres quite a few recent games i cant run on it anyway so i ll leave it for now and see what you can come up with later on. Sorry about this thanks for your help anyway. And if i do get it up and running on this computer i ll let you know.

Hello ive finally sent my dxdiag files to the Slitherine support unit. It seems to have been sent off alright if you can let me know if you have received it. I used my anti malware scan and it picked up a few pup files and i cleared them. But when i had to reinstall my winzip 18.5 to send these files my computer crashed twice. For quite a while i wonder if the free winzips affected my computer. I have uninstalled it to see if it crashes again. Since i did my system restore yesterday i had no crashes. Now when i reinstalled my winzip its starts to crash. If anyone else has had this problem let me know or is there another device i can use that should be more reliable to zip up documents and i dont have to keep reinstalling it every 30 days. Hope someone can help thanks.

This crashing with Winzip, indicates that something is not well in your system. With all the issues you have been reporting so far (including the ones in Panzer Corps), I believe something might be wrong in your system.
Perhaps you should think about a fresh Windows installation or maybe even for a hardware revision.

I got the same problem - from launcher when I click start button for Commander, nothing happens. I hear a click, but nothing happens. Change configuration menu opens normally. When I go to folder where product is downloaded, I do see a file called "ctgw_steam" Thinking that might be a launcher since it's sized at 4,833 kb, I click on that and get the message that "MSVCR110.dll" is missing. Don't know if that's relevant information for why the game doesn't start from launcher. Also tried running the Slitherine game launcher as administrator, but same thing - clicking on start button produces no results.

Your problem clearly is a driver issue, and the error indicates you are missing some software needed to run the game, like Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2012:

MSVCR110.dll is the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable dll that is needed for projects built with Visual Studio 2011. The dll letters spell this out. MS = Microsoft, V = Visual, C = C++, R = Redistributable

For Commander to get started, this file is needed.

This error appears when you wish to run a software which require the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable 2012.

Normally on install, you are requested to install or repair Visual C++, so you can do a re-install and this time install or repair Visual C++ when prompted to do so.

Hello i just thought i let everyone know ive finally manage to get my game started but havent got into it enough for other crashes. But it does seem one has to update ones graphic card drivers and also to download the Microsoft Redist 2012 file to get the Commanders game to run. And i also got the WW1 Centennial game and a few others on Steam as well. So it seems one has to hope for the best and keep your drivers updated. If i have more problems i will post it. Thanks for all your help and patience against a stubborn person.
