November 52 BC. Julius Caesar had decided to lift the siege of Gergovia, the capital of the Arvernii whose leader Vercingetorix had renewed the war against the Romans. Lest his withdrawal be seen as a defeat Caesar ordered a 3 legions assault on the Gallic encampment on the plateau outside Gergovia's walls, after Vercingetorix had been lured away to the other side of town. With their objective achieved, the Xth legion drew back as ordered but in the confusion the other two, notably the VIIIth, got carried away and tried to storm Gergovia itself. They soon found themselves in mortal danger as Vercingetorix rushed back.

Designer's notes:

The VIIIth and the XIth legions were hurled back down the slope after heavy fighting where they were rescued by the Xth legion that had redeployed following its planned withdrawal, and elements of the XIIIth legion advancing in support. Vercingetorix halted his horde and stayed on the heights, content with having severely mauled two legions.

The Roman player has more decisions to make: he is encouraged to attack Gergovia with the VIIIth legion to get at the victory points but he also needs to save enough units so he won't be overwhelmed at the bottom of the hill later. The XIth legion faces the same dilemma between committing troops to contain and inflict casualties on the massive horde led by Vercingetorix, and withdrawing as many units as possible. At the bottom of the heights, he can count on the elite Xth legion to steamroll anything the Gauls can throw at him.

The Arverni player needs to advance fast to crush the VIIIth and XIth legions and get to the victory points before the Xth and XIIIth legions fully engage.

no double moves, no fow
