I'll try to be constructive not to stop the discussion then. :)
BiteNibbleChomp wrote:a) I thought that Kiev was the duchy that became the Russian Empire that you get to destroy in my WWI mod!
Well, yes and no. To sum it up, Kiev Ruthenia (called simply Rus' by its' inhabitants) was the predecessor of all east Slavic states. A loose federation of states rather than a modern unitary state, it rose relatively quickly thanks to the Vikings (or Varangians if you prefer), it reached the apex in the 10th century and then started to disintegrate long before Gengis Khan. Yaroslav the Wise might have been a great ruler, but he died and soon the once vast state disintegrated, with most principalities going their own way. Mongols were able to capture the area so easily (and hold on to it for so long) mostly because there was a power vacuum there already.
b) When did the Mongols really care about the names of individual cities/kingdoms? I think that they thought more along the lines of "Hey, there's a rich and powerless city, let's go and plunder it". (I'm not trying to imply that they acted like this all the time, but in wartime they probably don't care what they attack).
Actually they did, and that's the whole beauty of them. On one side they are the icon of barbaric plague. On the other, they learnt pretty quick and by the time they reached Europe even the Romans could learn from them a thing or two about power, politics and grand strategy.

Take a closer look at their first invasion of Poland (1241), the one that ended with the battle of Legnica. Actually their target was Hungary. Yet Baydar dispatched a large army to Poland, as far as Silesia, with the task of disrupting Polish and German mobilisation, and prevent this force from joining with the Bohemians - or the Bohemians coming to Hungary's help. In the end their army defeated the Poles at Legnica, and then successfully made the Bohemian king believe it was still in Silesia whereas it was moving fast through his own land (Moravia) to Hungary. It was a true masterpiece of strategy, and it was achievable only because the Mongols carefully studied the neighbouring cities and kingdoms.

Plus their rule over what much later became Russia is a great example of divide and conquer.
c) I'm limited to about 40 nations, as any more and the game files go stupid for me, and so I've just united all the Russian kingdoms anyway. Makes life a lot easier when adding all the new units (why clone a 'Russian' unit 8 times for all the different kingdoms?), and also allows me to add cool things to destroy like Holy Rome and the Crusader states.
Cool, as long as we're careful about it and not merge too much in the wrong direction :)
d) As many units will be shared among nations (Jin/Song, England/France, Poland/Hungary/Bulgaria, the 4 Mongol tribes for the tutorials), I'm not going to be naming the units 'Jin Cannons' or 'French Kinghts'. Rather, it is far simpler to just name them 'Knights' or 'Spearmen'. I'm not going to even think about briefings at this stage, as I'm still making the maps and then units for the mod.
That's too bad. I was thinking of giving most of the groups (more on that later) a full complement of troop types. BUT many of them would not have to be assigned to the state they originated from. For instance you could have English and French knights, plus the Joannites and the Teutonic Knights fighting in Hungary, Poland and so on. It would be a tad similar to the way WWII Romania could field German and French tanks simultaneously. Or for instance you could fight against the Song (Chinese) forces forces in one scenario, and then see them as your auxiliaries in Europe (the Mongols did employ Chinese forces in Galicia and Hungary for instance).

But we'll see how it goes.
Any maps (or even scenarios!) you would like to see next?
The Poland-Moravia-Hungary campaign of 1241? Pretty, pretty please :)
Amazing units as usual! I'm combining the units that get uploaded into about 7 types, so that I don't have to find units for each individual nation (and what is the difference between a Kerait horseman and a Merkit horseman?)

- Arabs
- China + Vietnam
- Eastern Europe (Russia, Poland, Hungary)
- Byzantine Empire
- Japan + Korea (though Korea doesn't get the Samurai)
- Mongols
- Persia + India
- Western Europe (and Crusader States in the Holy Land)

- BNC
After you wrote that I should stop replying to your comments, get offended and start threatening you and your family :D Russia, Poland and Hungary in one group? Eastern Europe?! Oh come on! :)

Now seriously, don't. Poland+Bohemia+Hungary in one group is perfectly fine. Just as Poland, France, Germany and Hungary in one group. Same tactics, same knights, same religion, even the same arms and armour used in all those states. Ruthenia on the other hand (not Russia!) was a completely different matter. Different religion, different military traditions, different armament, armour and style. Plus this would look really awkward, as the Ruthenian forces fought alongside the Mongols against both Poland and Hungary (after having been conquered by them a little earlier).

Other than that, I was thinking alongside similar lines. Also, there seems to be a need for several "native" units to be used in various scenario. Armed peasants in Europe, partisans in southern China and what is now Vietnam, default steppe horseman (for any scenario between China and Europe for instance) and so on.

Finally, here's a sweetie for you. A camel rider. Usable for the Berber forces, for the Arabs and even the Central Asian steppes.

I'll put it simply, there is one Russian nation rather than 5, 10, 20 or however many there were. Seeing as there will only be one or two scenarios there, there is little point on making it so involved.

The Song weapons are a good example of captured auxillaries, except that they will actually appear in your core (and have a major use in it too - the Mongols don't have any heavy artillery on their own).

Unfortunately, there isn't a 1241 East European scenario within the campaign. At that point, you are doing things like invading Korea and the Song (After the Persian scenarios I showed earlier, you raid India until the time of Genghis's death. Then you are sent to finish of the Jin, and then continue into China). However, I am including the 3rd invasion in 1287-8 (The second one isn't possible because you are in the Crusader States at that point), and if this one is won, you go on to some Uk18-style scenarios including the invasion of Holy Rome!

I'll have to go through the files and edit all this Russia+Poland stuff then  . But yes, you do make a good point. I also don't have Bohemia as a nation (maybe part of Holy Rome?).

And if you threanten anyone, I shall be forced to use the stormtroopers again  as revenge! (Right after I gave them some leave!)

Sure. Just don't call it the Russian nation. Unless of course you plan to add Israeli campaign too. ;)

That's a pity :( Especially that there's not much to do during the 3rd invasion: first the Mongols followed the retreating Poles all the way to Cracow without any real battles, and then the Mongols retreated once Hungarian forces arrived. Not much fighting. The first invasion is much, much more interesting.

Also, this would mean that we actually don't need most of the units I have planned. :(

Anyway, here's one that would definitely come in handy: the Byzantine heavy infantry, the famed Varangian Guard.

I see that the 1st invasion of Poland would be more fun, but it will be harder to make the briefings have any sense at all if you spend all this time in China, then move to Europe for one scenario, then go back. A bit strange I think. Also, I'll set up the Poland scenario so that it feels more like the first 2 invasions, but call it the third. Due to the lack of large amounts of historical records, it is a lot easier to make scenarios seem 'realistic' than say WWI, where there are surviving battle plans and stuff that must be taken into account.

These 'planned units' will probably be able to make it into the mod anyway, maybe in one of the hypothetical scenarios in Western Europe?

At this stage I haven't built anything much other than the 3 maps and a collection of your units, so there is a lot still able to be changed or replaced! :D

Ok, I'll focus on Asia then for the moment. I realised that it's much easier to convert user-generated icons from Civ3 than to rescale tin soldiers or Osprey Books drawings. Here's a war elephant from the Civilization Fanatics Center forum. The icon is by Dom Pedro II, I merely converted it to Panzer Corps format.

BTW, this icon could be used for any SE Asian army, from China, through Vietnamese kingdoms to India.

Speaking of Civ III unit conversions, this tiny toy is called "Bad Neighbour". It's a trebuchet the Crusaders used in the Holy Land. The Arabs learnt pretty fast and started using their own trebuchets pretty soon. By the time the Mongols arrived, they were pretty common in European warfare. But it seems the Mongols knew them from the Persians as well and used them in 1268 in China. Anyway, such beasts were capable of projecting stones and other projectiles of several hundred kilograms at a distance of several hundred metres. Enough to reduce any defensive fortification to rubble.

The model is by Jimmyh and Kilroy from the Civfanatics forum, I merely converted it. The unit comes in two variants and should behave like heavy artillery: either you fire or you wrap the shop up and convert it to a mobile, defenceless version. Historically trebuchets were built anew every time they were needed as transporting them over large distances was impractical, but why not simplify things a tad?

Could someone check if the trebuchet works in-game? I'm still away from my desktop ATM.

EDIT/ and another CivIII conversion: a battering ram. Pretty universal unit, I'm sure every nation woud find some use for it.

EDIT2/ Uploaded a better version of the trebuchet icon above (less rescaling = sharper gfx)

EDIT3/ Reworked trebuchet transport cart icon above.

Then you surely need some navy. Here's the first three ships, all converted from Civ3 icons.

The pirate galley could be used for basically any nation of the Mediterranean.

The Chinese cargo junk was pretty much a standard for other countries of the region, the Mongols used them as well for their invasions of Japan.

Now a dhow. AFAIR the original dhows were built in India, but with time they proved extremely popular among the Muslim nations and even in southern Europe.

And a goodie: a Baode, or the Chinese treasure ship, the largest wooden ship of its' era. AAMoF it was deployed slightly outside of our timeframe, but what the hell.

BTW, I also have a nice pic of the Korean turtle ship (early 15th century), any need for it?

Sorry, It's not ready yet.

Why don't you release your mod so that I don't take all your customers when it gets round to 1206! (I will anyway, but you might as well have them for the next few months!)

OK, The 'flags' are done now! (Thanks RumpNissen!) Oh wait, a medieval flag is actually a shield, but who said we had to use shields anyway? Beware of Persia and their mighty lion-hybrid emblem!

BTW, there's plenty of ready-made city models on SketchUp warehouse. They can be quite easily turned into map tiles to replace the vanilla modern towns and villages. There's everything, from individual pagodas to entire towns and from small keeps to Krak des Chevaliers. Take a look at this Middle Eastern village for instance.

I was actually quite serious, you cannot have the mod now as you request. I was merely suggesting that you get the Soviet mod out before this is done to get lots of downloads!

However, If you would like I could get you onto some of the early tests that should begin happening at the start of next month.

I quite like the Arab city in the middle. Also, I'll be needing West-European, East-European, Chinese and Japanese style graphics as well. Add them to the end of "LayerTerrain", "LayerTerrainMuddy" and "LayerTerrainFrozen" files.

Also, will someone be able to make or find some good medieval-style roads that could be used in any part of the world?

Great!

Back to the unit topic, how do people think that the attack animations should be done in terms of melee weapons like swords? These are quite widespread in the mod, so I'll need a good idea for them.

Early part of the campaign at this stage will look something like:

(Tutorial)
Merkits, 1200
Jamukha's Betrayal [Khamags], 1201
Keraits, 1203
Naimans, 1204

Western Xia, 1207
Great Wall of China, 1211
Zhongdu [Beijing], 1215
Kara-Khitai, 1218
Khwarezmia [Persia], 1219
India [Punjab Raids], 1222

And some later missions:

Kaifeng, 1232
Korea, 1239
Crusader States, 1260
A New Dynasty [referring to the forming of the Yuan - end of the Song], 1276
Japan, 1281
[3rd] Poland, 1287 (will be set up to be more like the 1st however)
Holy Roman Empire, ~1290s-1300s (hypothetical)
Southern Finland [v. Sweden], ????? (I can't find exactly when)
Java, 1293 (losing path)

Any more missions you would like to see?
