Chariots of war II

Post by gollummen »

Chariots of war is one of the very best historical strategy games I have ever played with its "simple" battle system and great resource handling combined with a very rare and exciting historical setting.

I know that there is talk about Legion II as the next game with this type of engine, and of cours I dont know what type of changes you have in mind, but the roman times have been seen in computer games so many times and lack the freshness(?) that the early ancient period has.

I find it difficult to write idears for a COW 2 game because in my oppinion the game is quite perfect as it is and it could easily get ruined by over-complicated systems and micromanegment.

I do, however, have a few thoughts:

Caravans/trade rutes that can be blockaded/robbed
A bit more diplomacy without making it as complicated as in Spartan
More historical information
Attacks on cities
Using grain as the coinage(?)
A more restricting supply system for the armies (they have to carry their food with them or plunder as they go like in "Knights of honor")
WEGO system instead of IGOYGO
Ordering the gererals to go somewhere and then the order cannot be changed instantly. The further away the army is from your ruler the longer time it takes to change the armies orders.

The key point here is to use the expand the way that COW takes advantage of the very limited possibilities of an ancient ruler/general (the battles in COW are realistic and challenging).
What I am trying to say is that you could make a very interesting game by using the limited options in the time period.
The less control the player has, the more important it is what he does with it.

I hope I make at least some sense. English is not my first language :)

Thanks - we are glad you like it. Unfortunately its not our bvest selling game but then it is pretty old now! We don't have any plans to look at it for now but who knows what might happen in the future.

I would like to add my voice in support of this idea as well. COW is one of my favourite games, and definitely the best depiction of the Ancient Near East that exists in video games (I still vividly remember ordering a copy on ebay and waiting and waiting and waiting for it, and every time the mail truck came by, I hoped with all my might that it would be delivering the game, and the day it finally came, I put it in the computer and fell in love almost instantly). Personally, I would like to see Legion II first, but then maybe with the lessons learned from that, make COW II the best game ever! :)

Oh Gods of the Abyss, oh Great Mother Tiamat - convince those Slitherine guys to make Chariots of War 2! :D

As for ideas... I don't know really. Sieges. Some religious stuff maybe (temples of different gods grant different bonuses). Captive enemies become slaves (boost to economy). Some personalities maybe (great ancient kings, warlords, priests or such).

And about battle system... I like it but I can't understand when people say "it's just because it's ancient times and those ancient guys were so primitive that they could not to control thier troops, give orders, and they just were whacking each other with reed sticks till death"... :) The fact they did not have GPS doesn't mean they didn't have means and ways to manage and command their battles :D . All kinds of banners, trumpet or drum signals, messengers (human or avian maybe) and such. And when the melee slaughter begins, you may put your GPS into your *** even in our days 'cause melee is melee in any times.
