Northern Doubles - 6th April - Runners and Riders

Post by dave_r »

This is an open competition run at 900 points - there has been a pleasant mix of entries from both Rise of Rome and Storm of Arrows

Runners and Riders are:

Code: Select all

Neil Howard and Matt Poole Seleukid
Dave Ruddock and Dave Eltringham Seleukid
Alan Cole and Paul Carter Scots Common
James Hamilton & Michele Minett Santa Hermandad Nueva Castillian
Alistair Moore & Roger Greenwood Later Low Countries
Phil Powell and Jonathan Smith Polybian Roman
Mick Hood and Neil Duffell Medieval French
Matthew and Andrew Martin Medieval Castillian
Martin Buxton and Steve Clarke Medieval German
Andy McKay and Adrian Steele Medieval German
I hoped that worked OK. how do you put a tab in the box?

EDIT: Fixed the line up, I don't think you can use tabs in a code box, it just uses a fixed width font - Hammy

Doesn't look like there is going to be much subtle play. Pike, spear, legionaries and knights straight down the middle?

Was there some forward planning with releasing the army list books in the order they have appeared? Everyone gets time to learn all the rules before the clever skirmishing mounted bow lists get published.

The options are available - Parthian is a very good list.

We need to be a bit careful about stating which armies have been chosen because of the class restrictions in the Northern Doubles. Just to clarify, each army is designated as Class 1, 2 or 3. This is based upon the points values of all the Superior, Elite and IC's in your army.

If this total is more than 450 you are class 1, more than 225 you are class 2 and less than 225 class 3. If your army is more than 15 BG's you also get moved "up" a category.

What this means is that you are looking for a class 2/3 army to duff up a class 1 army. Probably the most common (especially given the army books published) superior troops are Knights. Therefore there are a lot of Heavy Foot anti-Knight armies about.

Should make for some interesting games, as the knights are definitely capable of breaking through.

Well i think there are some more interesting prospects in the game than down the middle. And all the drilled armies allow some 90 degree turns and move which radically reshapes the battlefield quickly.

Seleukids have enough mounted to have a powerful manuver wing. But one that doesn't want to walk into the front of knights.

Pike people like because it is easy ++ POA but no one says you have to go straight into them. They are probably not wider than 8-9 files. Which is wide but not wall-to-wall. If they are forced to echelon then a lot changes.

There are some nifty MF troops and some uneven or rough terrain complicates the pike and knights a good bit.

The KN armies aren't going to just charge onto the Pike unless they feel lucky or want to get to lunch fast. While the KN may blow through, odds are quite good that the KN take some losses and then have their flanks in the air if there is a force to counterr strike.

Any news on results?

Hopefully Mick and Neil did well for Rotherham. ;)

The Northern League uses a modified 32-0 system with bonuses for beating a higher class army (in FoG terms an army with lots of superiors or ICs). There are only two games as the rounds are one day affairs.

1st - Martin and Philip Willkinson 54 points
2nd- James Hamilton and Michele Minett 52 points
3rd - Mathew and Andrew Martin - 44 points

The full results will be on the Northern League page fefore too long www.maws.org.uk and I will look to get them into the hall of honour.

In our first game both BGs of knights on our side fought nothing and only one of them even got close enough to the enemy to be able to charge. The game was won by good honest armoured infantry.
