It is a real dream having the possibility of building an early roman army !

I have played ancient wargaming for a long time but i never started an old good legionary army since it was not a (IMHO clearly) a competitive army. We started playing fog since the rules were available with real fun. I was very happy to lift to my house a couple of tons of lead that were buried in the basement (though my wife was not that happy ...) and start painting and basing and organizing ancents again ... Thanks to Richard and the other of the gang ...

I turn to my current interest. I want to be prepared when the imperial roman book is out and want to start orgainzing my army. I need suggestions fromt those who already have seen lisits and played the roman army.

I have in mind and army of trajan or marcus aurelius (... that's my kids wish..) and plan to use old glory miniatures that i like very much...

How many legionary units ? Units with 4, 6, 8 bases ?
How many auxilia ? 4, 6 bases ?
How many equites ?

Other stuffs like artilery, bowmen outher auxilia ?
Are there lists around ?

How will this period list be called in the book ?

Hi Daniele,

There will be three imperial Roman lists, Principate, Dominate and Foederate.

Principate is from Augustus's reforms in 25BC until Diocletian in 284 AD,
Dominate is from Diocletian until Valentinian III
The Foederate until the end of the Western Empire and for me is a sort of proto-Byzantine

The main changes are the decline in the legionaries in the later period, better auxiliaries in the middle and later lists, and the increasing use of better cavalry, and the introduction of "barberian" foederate troops in the Foederate list.

For example, Principate legionaries are core troops, either:
Heavy foot, superior, drilled, armoured, impact foot, skilled swordsmen or
Heavy foot, average, drilled, armoured or protected, impact foot, swordsmen

In Dominate they are pretty much the same, but in Foederate they become optional troops and have declined to:
Heavy foot, average or poor, drilled, protected or unprotected, light spear, swordsmen

All can have supporting LF archers.

(Note this is from beta lists, they may change in the final version, but I doubt by much).

For size of BG's, generally if they are superior, I'd use 6's, possibly 4's. Average usually 8's, but also 6's.

So for Trajan or Marcus Aurelius you need to look at Principate, and basically you want to build round a core of legionaries. At 800AP I'd say about 18/24 bases of these. They are very powerful in combat so tactics should revolve around getting them into combat; all very historical!

Guglielmo Marlia and Stefano Grombi are big Roman fans, Stefano especially the Principate, so might give better advice.

non vedevo l'ora di fare i romani !
qui a bologna gioca anche andrea ed un ragazzo (si fa per dire, ha la nostra età) che gioca anche a fow (come noi del resto)

COme dicevo FOG mi ha fatto riportare su dalla cantina tonnellate di piombo seppellite dal DBM ed ancora di più dal DBMM....

se son rose fioriranno. Per il momento il gioco ci piace anche se un po' lento (anche se siamo inesperti ormai abbiamo fatto 4 partite).
Vorremmo organizzare presto un torneo... che voi sappiate ce ne saranno ?

Ciao Daniele, aggiungo un paio di considerazioni oltre a quelle che ha fatto Peter.

I battlegroups dovrebbero essere almeno di 6 basette altrimenti sono troppo fragili, solo se hai truppe di elite puoi fare BG da 4 basi.

Dai un'occhiata al Battle report di Carre trovi una lista del primo impero.

ho guardato la lista di carre ed ho un paio di domande.

sui legionari da 6 sono d'accordo. ho giocato diverse partite contro i romani (late repubblican ma sono non molto diversi da questi).

idem sulle cav da 4 che sono più manovrabili anche se fragiline.

se ho ben capito nel princpate s possono mettere i bw LF in supporto ai legionari: servono ?

perchè gli auxilia da 8 ?

servono i catafratti con un esercito di panzer ? vanno solo ad 1 MU in più e i legionari superior con un generale in prima linea credo temano ben pochi ! ritirando gli 1 ed i 2 ...

ho provato i Dominate Roman ieri contro i Parti dell'Ateniese Cioffi.
E' un esercito molto interessante che picchia molto. Contro i Parti è stato un bel test dal momento che i LH dei Parti tirano tutti: i legionari al tirono tengono molto bene, le Cv meno, anche perchè di ala si sono trovate 2-3 BG che tiravano.
Ho incontrato il solito problema del DBM: Parti molto mobili che sono riusciti a rallentare le Legioni.

Questa è l'army list (con 13 BG) che ho rivisto adesso (nella precedente versione avevo 1 BG da 6 di Equites Illyricani al posto dei 2 di Sagittarii):

1 C-in-C Field Commander
2 Sub-commanders TC
4 Legioni da 4 basette HF Sup/ Drilled/ Armoured/ Imp foot/ Skill SW
2 BG da 6 basette di Auxliaries MF Av/ Drilled/ Prot/ Light Sp/ SW
2 BG da 4 basette di Equites CV Sup/ Drilled/ Armoured/ Light Sp/ SW
2 BG da 4 basette di Clibanarii CT Sup/ Drilled/ Hw Armoured/ Lancers/ SW
2 BG da 4 basette di Equites Sagittarii LH Av/ Drilled/ Unprotected/ Bow
1 BG da 4 basette di Archers LF Poor/ Drilled/ Unprotected/ Bow.

Se i BG sono superiori non è necessario avere 6 basette ma 4 sono sufficienti.
Considera che la mia versione ha il massimo dei montati delle Core Troops.
Per ora non ho preso il campo fortificato.
