The rules say an ambush can only be in the outer two thirds of the table.
Does this mean the ambush marker can only be in the outer two thirds but any troops associated with that marker can then be deployed as they wish including goign into the inner third of the table?
or
The marker and all troops in ambush must all stay in the outer two thirds?

Re: Ambush Question
Well, this isn't an official answer but i'd say the spirit of the rule is that all the ambushing bases must be in the outer third of the table.ethan wrote:The rules say an ambush can only be in the outer two thirds of the table.

The letter of the rule would seem to support this as well as p142 says, ''place ambushes up to half way across the table from his side's rear table edge, in the two outer third's of the table's width...'
(my emphasis)
It does not say 'place ambush markers'.
I'd be inclined to say therefore that all ambushing bases should be placed in the outer third.
Remember as well that all such bses must be placed 'no closer than the first base to ANY enemy BG to which it would be visible' (p143) (i.e. not just the enemy BG that revealed the ambush!). Placing ambushes seems tricky...
That's an interesting albeit a minor play on words .. and I am not sure we even gave that any consideration in detail and I have never seen it happen yet ... and the spirit of the rule was just to clear ambushes from the middle .. which it does both ways. The rules say an ambush can only be in the outer two thirds of the table.

- In general we have tried to get rid of as many memory effects or map writing effects or tricky restrictions.
The simplest way to to do this is that ambush markers go down in the outer thirds and stay in the outer thirds. This is where we talk about putting them in the sections of the table.
When you put troops on the table then you must have 1 base on the ambush marker - I have to be honest here and have never checked if the troops thus placed were also in the side sections (but then I can't think of 1 occassion where it made much difference).
At this stage you just qualify with that, so I guess that troops could then edge into the centre as at the limit only1 base would have to be in the side sections.
Of course if anyone can see anything open to be abused badly we would probably FAQ as te poster says above.
I suppose if someone is going to single rank an ambnush of 12 MF Gauls behind a steep hill using this mechanism it might seem a bit gamey, so probably the best FAQ is to say the ambush markers and the following troops must go in the sector. It does mean they may get trapped more easily unable to deploy though. And also 12 Gauls in single rank are mighty vulnerable so i am not sure I would consider them anythin other than atarget for missile troops or any MF in 2 ranks.
