Building a Late Republican Roman Army

I'm new to Field of Glory and trying to put together my first army--Late Republican period around the time of Caesar and the Civil Wars.

After reading some of the other posts and AARs, I'm thinking:

Commander-in-Chief--Filed Comander (50 pts)
Sub-Commanders--2xTroop Comanders (70 pts)
Legionaires--5BGs (6 stands each) Superior/Armored/Drilled (420 pts)
Heavy Cavalry--1BG (6 stands) Superior/Armored/Undrilled (96 pts)
Light Cavalry--2BGs (6 stands each) Unprotected/Average/Undrilled (84 pts)
Archers--1BG (6 stands) Unprotected/Average/Undrilled (30 pts)
Slingers--1BG (6 stands) Unprotected/Average/Undrilled (24 pts)
Fortified Camp-1 (24 pts)

Total--798 points

My thought is the missile troops will conduct long range attacks while the legions 5 BGs will form an anvil and the cavalry will be the hammer...

Any thoughts? Or should I go purchase other troops...LOL

Your cavalry are not the quality of others, the firepower of Roman's are the legions, and your supporting troops are there to "herd" your opponent into them.
In fact they are so hard most players will avoid the Legions and target your supporting troops - so don't let them become too detached from the main firepower.
Lastly cavalry in 6's don't work that well - try them out in 4's

The legions are fierce. The rest of the army is there to support them.

I think you have a solid list.

The great thing is another BG of legionaires is always a good thing.

You "could" consider downgrading one legion BG to raw and using it as a resrve or flank guard. Or eliminate it all together.

Things to think about a 3rd TC is nifty. Can you trim 2 bases of a legion and/or LH to get it.

You could also look at having a MF BG.

But at the end of the day 30 stands of the legion has the ability to treat a lot of people roughly.

Based on the comments I've seen elsewhere, I've opted for another BG of Legionaires (albeit smaller than the others) that can be held as a reserve or to guard key terrain.

I can also change the slingers to archers and bring the total to 800 points even...I'm just thinking the slingers are a bit more historical...

OK...here is the "final" 800-point army list...defined as "those figures I have already purchased or ordered for my first army." This list will likely change after I have my butt handed to me a few times...we'll just have to see.

Looks like a solid list

The one suggestion I would make from my one and only time playing FoG, would be to take the skirmisher units in groups of 8 instead of 6.

Most of the time my group of 6 shot it was totally ineffective. One more dice would have helped quite a bit.

Most of the time shooting by single skirmisher BGs is going to be ineffective, unless the enemy is silly enough to form column.

Where shooting becomes effective is when you can concentrate 2 shooting BGs against one enemy BG, and this may actually be easier to achieve with 6s.

It is certainly not possible to say that 8s are better in all circumstances than 6s. Their main advantage is not the extra shooting dice, but the fact that the enemy need to score 3 hits on them to cause a CT. Now that really does make a big difference.
