Disorder caused by Elephants and Camels
Should elephants and camels disorder horses of their own side ?

Re: Disorder caused by Elephants and Camels
Yes Pete I know that they do. My question was should they ?
Were the horses of armies that contained elephants used to the smell, noise etc of elephants and therefore not 'disordered' by them?
Just a general question, not trying to change the rules or anything.

If you deploy them in a certain way, they don't actually suffer any ill-effects for being disordered.
Where
is an elephant and
&
are separate cavalry BGs, as disorder is by base, and only 2 bases of each BG are disordered, the cavalry suffer no ill-effects as far as combat dice are concerned.
As to design philosophy - I can't help with that one - sorry.

I think the authors were aiming at something that gave the same effect as not disordering your own side in terms of dice in combat, but without having to write a special set of rules to cover it.

Re: Disorder caused by Elephants and Camels
So historically some armies like the Muslim Indians of the 14th-17th century did train horses to operate near elephants in combat. In fact a large number of military manuals from that area talk about this and also about how horse borne soldiers should seek to defeat enemy elephants.Warlord wrote:Yes Pete I know that they do. Then you wonder about the elephants that operated with Hannibal. Well it is possible that at some point the horses in the army got used to the elephants. But not necessarily and new horses that would be "recruited" along the way. And in his area we have less historical information than the above Indian example. Partially because the Indian sources are more renaissance era.
Now the authors also opted for flat rules across all armies and not so much special rules for each army.

Thanks for the replies, looks like the rules have the elephant problem well sorted.
