Terrain Placement

Post by patwarg »

A query arising from a game over the weekend.

Because of a peculiar combination of dice throws most of the terrain was placed along one long edge. This became so extreme that the final piece of terrain, which again should have been placed along this edge , could not be legally fitted in. The decision was made that in that circumstance it would not be placed. Is this the correct thing to do and could you point me to the relevant section for this in the rules?

On another topic the diagram on page 146 shows the table divided into thirds. I have not found any reference to this in the rules and am worried that I am missing some vital point about deployment. Can you advise please?

Thanks in anticipation,

Pat

If it can't fit it doesn't.

I have no idea why there are thirds in the diagram. There is nothing in the rules about thirds :?

Ahh, I haven't done an ambush in FoG yet.

To be honest I rarely did them in DBM so that is probably why.

terrain choice and placement

Post by WhiteKnight »

If I choose eg a steep hill as a terrain piece and have three or four such hills in me box of terrain bits, can I choose which of those hills to place just before rolling the placement dice? What about after the placement dice throwing?
If I choose two terrain pieces of the same type, can I choose which one to place first?

In other words, do you have to choose specific terrain pieces in advance of any dice rolling and place them in the order you picked them, within the restrictions/rules given on terrain type placement?

Thanks,
Martin

Choose the terrain you want and then place it.

I normally just stack up the stuff I am going to use and roll dice from the top.

Terrain Placement

Thanks for the replies. I too have not got into ambushes, as yet, so had not twigged what the thirds were for.

Thirds also affect fortifications IIRC.

Basically you need to choose all the terrain pieces before throwing dice for any of them. I don't have my rules in front of me, but I think this is stated in the terrain appendix. It prevents a player from getting too cheesy.

Page 140 makes it pretty clear that all are chosen before placement dice IMO.

I agree, p 140 is quite specific!

The only latitude seems to be with the placing of terrain pieces of the same type...eg if I selected a large and a small gentle hill, I choose which one I place first. Is that right?
So an area is pretty congested with terrain and my large hill won't fit, I can place the small one?

You dice per specific terrain feature, so the answer is no. That is to say, you would announce that you are dicing to place your large hill, roll the dice and place the hill. Then you dice for your small hill. You don't roll the dice, then decide which one to place. Too much cheese that way.

Agreed, noone likes cheesey gamesmanship or people who who use the wording of rules to stretch the spirit/intention of the game.
FWIW I think FOG has much less potential for this as it's more simply yet carefully written and has been through a better playtest cycle.
