Mixed BG in Warring States Chinese

Looking at the mixed MF battle groups in the Warring States Chinese list, it seems that the MF with HW in front rank and xbow in the rear can be either Armoured or Protected.
Does the rear rank have to have the same armour class as the front rank? Or can you armour the front HW rank and leave the xbow as only protected?(or indeed visa versa)?

I don't think there is any reason why you cannot do that.

Some may question whether it is a good idea but you do get cheaper BG's.

Page 155 of Empires of the Dragon - last bullet point. There's a similar paragraph in every army list book.
