Yeeeees!! Another Legion Arena review from Duncan...in spanish, of course.
http://www.meristation.com/v3/des_anali ... &c=1&pos=2
I'll try to explian/translate what he has said about Legion Arena in my oh-I-missed-that-school-day english, hope you'll understand.
I must say it is well written and makes some good points, but he makes some mistakes too. He writes for one of the important spanish paper magazines too (Pc Life), so it can be trend-setting...
He begins telling us that Slitherine has made Legion before and its sequel (?), then he starts talking about RTW (second mistake, IMHO), telling us how inevitable is to compare this two games, but at least he sees one or two differences (no grand strategy, but RPG bits..he seems to like it). He thinks RTW is better, because LA has some different options but they are scarce.
He doesn't like the graphics. No one, except Anguille and I, seems to like the graphics. Well, I must say I don't like RTW graphics: I tried Quake 4 demo and they are far better than RTW's. Stupid, isn't it? Well...
He likes music, but thinks it's too repetitive. He prefers a 4-5 song cycles. I agree with him.
Then, he describes the game mechanics...he thinks it's too repetitive too: combat, then upgrade, planning and combat again...and too fast. He would like longer battles (so do I). He likes multiplayer, but he doesn't like the fact that it is only for two players...
Good points:
- Low price
- Experience system for units
- Gentle learning curve
Bad points:
- Ye olde graphics
- Repetitive
- Limited multiplayer.

I don't understand those reviewers who complain about the graphics. It's like they expect the graphics to look a ceartain way
and when it doesn't they thrash it. I think it's fine.
Regarding the speed, I too was a bit concerned at first but I've come to like it more and more. It's certainly a nice thing when one has to do the same battle 15 times before winning.
I play the battles more or less like a WEGO-system a la Combat Mission games, but with variable turn length:
Give some orders paused. See how the battle unfolds. Pause and give some new orders when appropriate.
I also think it should have worked great in Legion2. Too bad that game is cancelled.

Good point, never thought of that...because I don't have to repeat my battles
