Gary Grigsby's War in the East and Lost Battles

I ordered these 2 games today and also downloaded the latest updates. As soon as the first page opens to preferences, options and scenarios, the page flickers on and off and while I could manage to change the options and preferences, I couldn't start the scenarios. The scenarios simply won't load. Is it my system or is it the game????? What in my system may be missing. I'm computer illiterate, so spell it out in simple terms.
