Re: Themed event Pool A: post your results here
klayeckles, beside luck, I think the biggest difference was troop positioning in the bigger scale. In the game where you were the pyrrhics, you probably shouldn't have separated those pikes on the other side(although they did crush my troops, they couldn't affect the "real" confrontation with the rest of the army). And retreating to the hills, while normally smart, wasn't that good here, since it allowed me to focus more troops on the units trapped before they reached the hill, giving me a greater advantage there.
Where you were the romans, the only thing I could think of is that your units were sandwhiched between my units, giving me the opportunity to rear charge in the end.
As for the final, both games have started, but given how huge they are, we'll be hardpressed to finish them by the deadline, I think. But we'll see.

Re: Themed event Pool A: post your results here
A quick update on the mirror match between me and Tiavals.

This is the initial setup. The Carthaginians at the top have a huge numerical advantage. The red shield hoplites to the front left are superior and armoured. The front right are impact foot Gauls. There is a front skirmish line of half impact and half light spear MF, very useful units to hold the patches of rough terrain and for fast outflanking moves. The LF are all javelinmen. The rest of the troops are standard protected hoplites. The Pyrrhics have the pikes flanked by hoplites with lancers and elephants in reserve and average armoured cavalry on the far right. The LF are a mix of slingers and archers.

In the first game Tiaval's Carthaginians marched forward in a straight line, sending the MF and LF ahead to skirmish. My Pyrrhics marched diagonally right towards the weaker part of the enemy line and avoiding the Superiors. The Carthage MF got a bit too near and were ambushed by lancers who rushed out from behind the pikes and got a few kills before retreating back. So far the pikes have made short work of the Gauls and Hoplites. But Tiavals best troops have yet to join the action.

In the second mirror match Tiavals split his forces into three. Cavalry and hoplites attacking fast down the left, the pikes slowly coming down the center and the hoplites to the right moved even further right creating a gap between them and the pike phalanx. My Carthaginians refused their left flank, anchoring it on some terrain with MF and pushed hard with the right flank, lead by the superiors, aiming for the gap and hopeful envelopment. A small force of MF and spears guarded against the enemy hoplites on the far right, again making use of the terrain.
