Campaign 2014

Post by quackstheking »

Hi all,

Firstly thanks for your patience, but as you all know there have been issues with the usual venue this year and therefore MKWS have had to cancel the trade elements of Campaign, but the usual competitions will go ahead with the same format at a new venue.

In view of this late notice, we have tried to stick with our principle of tightly themed periods, but have selected themes where there are plenty of the popular armies available to players plus the possibility of lots of “loaner” armies!
The details are as follows:-

Date: - 10th & 11th May

Venue: - Icon Innovation Centre, Eastern Way, Daventry, Northamptonshire NN11 0QB

http://www.icon-innovation.co.uk/

Teams of three – Individuals may enter and they will either be combined with others to form an ad-hoc team or be joined with an entered team of two.

Format: - Five games of 3 hours (+ up to 15 minute variable)

Saturday
• 09.00 – First competition round.
• 13.00 – Second competition round.
• 16.30 – Third competition round (ending at 19.30)
Sunday
• 09.00 – Fourth competition round.
• 13.00 – Fifth competition round.
• 16.30 –Prize giving

Points: 800 points

Cost: £20.00 per player (£60 per team of 3), payable on the day.

Period 1: The Fight for Dutch Independence(1568-1633) : - Early Imperial Spanish; Elizabethan English; Early Eighty Years war Dutch; Later Eighty Years War Dutch; Later Imperial Spanish (Army of Flanders); French Huguenot; French Catholic.

Period 2: Trouble in the East 1577- 1589 – Early Ottoman Turks; Wallachian, Moldavian and Transylvanian; Early Russian; Vasa Swedish; Cossack; Later Imperial Austrian; Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth; Early Venetian Colonial.

Period 3: Armies of Asia, Africa and America, between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn 1500 – 1644: - Muslim Indian, Hindu Indian, Indonesian or Malaccan; Thai, Burmese and Khmer; Vietnamese; Horn of Africa; Hawaiian; Mughal; Aztec; Tlaxcalan, Huaxtec or Otomi; Tarascan; Zapotec or Mixtec; Chinatec; Mayan; Inca; Mapuche or Araucanian; Tupi; Amazonian Forest Tribes; Chichimec; Western Sudanese; Central African; Central Sudanese; West African Forest; Mossi. (European Allies allowed – no more than 4 BG’s)

Umpire: - Don Avis

Army lists: - Army lists emailed no later than 4th May 2014 to Don Avis – don.avis@ntlworld.com

Please email on the above address with your entries and any questions.

Hi Alasdair,

Yes. The intention was to pick the armies that operated in the Balkans, Eastern Europe and Western Russia between the dates selected (which were chosen to knock out the Later Imperial Austrian Cuirassiers). Although I'm no expert on Tatar history (!), the army list books indicated that the last large scale Tatar activity in this area was in 1569.

If you want to be the Hoof Meister then it has to be period 2 where the true Hoof Meister can show you how to do it.

On the Dutch independence period ... don't want to open a can of worms, but I have a few concerns that the list of armies is a little misconceived.

The issue is there are 7 permitted armies. Two are allowed muskets, and so are much more viable. And of these two the Later Spanish are much better than the Later Dutch, as they've got more varied troops, dragoons, light horse, foot which can be upgraded etc. Later Spanish is the stand-out choice. If anybody brings anything else, I bet it'll only be in its 'pistols-max' variant.

If we had just those first five armies (Early Spanish, Early Dutch, Elisabethan English, Huguenot and Catholic) we'd probably end up with a more varied selection in the comp. Would be even more interesting, varied and historical if we enforced minimum proportions of foot and horse. If anybody's worried that five armies is too restrictive, we could always add in a couple of contemporaries which weren't part of the conflict.
However, with those five armies I think you'll still end up with more variety than you would with the current seven.

So far we have 5 confirmed team as follows:-

1) Milton Keynes - Don Avis, Richard Bodley-Scot, Jim Gibson
2) Forlorn Hope - Bob Medcraft, Ben Jones, Dave Parrish
3) The Escape Committee - Tim Porter, Simon Le Ray Meyer, Dave Allen,
4) The BJ'S - Paddy Bray, Kevin Johnson, Stephen Stead
5) Les Trois Mousquetiaires - Ray Boyles, Simon Clarke, Chris Beesley

We can take only one more team as 6 teams for 5 games is the optimal number. If you're thinking of getting your team in then please do so quickly!!

If any team is thinking of entering but don't have the figures available, we have many armies from all 3 periods that we let you use as "loaner" armies.

Full details on who's playing what period and with what army will be posted next week with the draw order!

Great news - we are now up to 6 confirmed teams thanks to Burton club entering, so that's the numbers closed!

The final list of entrants is:-

1) Milton Keynes - Don Avis, Richard Bodley-Scot, Jim Gibson
2) Forlorn Hope - Bob Medcraft, Ben Jones, Dave Parrish
3) The Escape Committee - Tim Porter, Simon Le Ray Meyer, Dave Allen,
4) The BJ'S - Paddy Bray, Kevin Johnson, Stephen Stead
5) Les Trois Mousquetiaires - Ray Boyles, Simon Clarke, Chris Beesley
6) Burton - Dene Green, Pete Gregory, Steve Holt

So that's 5 games each against every other team!

If you can get me your army lists in over the weekend that would be great so I can publish both the runners with riders( :D ) and also the draw order.

Will there be food and drink available over both days at the venue as the website says that the café is Open to the public Monday to Friday 08:00 - 16:00?

If the venue does not have food and drink is there anywhere locally that we can use?

Hi Bob,

I'm told that The Icon Café will be open for Breakfast and Lunches both days. There is also an 'honesty bar' on site too for out of hours refreshments.

For evening food there is a McDonalds the other side of the roundabout, behind Halfords (c.800yrd) plus various fast food establishments in town.

The iCon café food is great. Very decently priced, the portions and quality are good (the Roast at previous shows has been outstanding). The café and honesty bar stock crisps, chocolates and alcoholic beverages, including the excellent local 'Nobby's Brewery' beers. :D

Teas, juices, coffees and snacks will be available during the morning from the café (we have had waitress service too), and during the afternoon from a flask arrangement.

Hope this helps

After a slight delay with getting all the lists in and real life intervening(!), here are the full runners and riders for this weekend plus the draw so that you can start planning those cunning stunts that you intend to pull against Saturdays opponents!!!

It's great to see such a wide variety of armies and generally even where there is overlap, the compositions are very different. In Period 1 we have 3 different armies with an even split between Huguenot, Spanish and Dutch; in period 2, 4 different armies with 2 Ottomans, 2 Wallachians, 1 later Imperial Ottoman and 1 Polish (give that man a medal! ) and in Period 3 5 different lists with the usual mass of Indians with all the variety of a Brick Lane curry house plus a Malayan (well I haven't used it and it's pretty thanks to Mr Lurkio!) and finally either an inspired or possibly suicidal choice from Mr Allen with Amazonian Forest Indian (the arrows will definitely darken the sky!)

It only remains for me to wish you all good luck, safe journeys and see you in the morning.
