In dementia land myself and grandad had some problems with a legality of a charge
I declared a charge on a unit of light cav with a unit of light chariots
They were within a legal move distance
It started in a flank charge position (outside I mu}
I declared my direction of charge to cause a burst through
Grandad said as I would have to wheel to impose this direction I could not then contact light horse so could not choose this direction as a direction,
I said this was irrelevant as I could contact with legal move
It was a flank charge
I pick my direction
Under evade it says flank charge evades directly away from direction of charge
Opinions please? Cheers Dino

Re: a charge legal or not legal?
If your charge direction will not contact the target where it is then its not a charge as it will not contact so cannot be done. and he won't have to evade because he will not be contacted..

Agreed. The direction of charge must be able to make contact otherwise it's not a charge. If your charge direction will not contact the target where it is then its not a charge as it will not contact so cannot be done. and he won't have to evade because he will not be contacted..

Re: a charge legal or not legal?
Is the question whether you are allowed to wheel as part of a charge? If so, then the answer is yes, so long as you start more than 1MU away.
If the question is can you set up the charge direction so that it wouldn't contact the target, then the answer is no, of course not, because then it's not a charge.
Further, I think if you wheel you must contact the target with at least as many bases as you would have by moving straight ahead; you can't reduce the contact area by wheeling, though you can increase it.

I haven't the time to look it up, but in V2 I think the contact issue is expressed in terms of maximising/not minimising the number of combat dice, rather than the number of bases, and furthermore I'm not sure if it makes a difference.
Cheers

Yes, you are right - v2 changed it from number of bases to number of dice.
I can't imagine there are many circumstance where it makes a difference, but I seem to recall someone pointing one out; I guess if must involve a mixed unit with HF and LF or something like that.

Or LH who could charge the enemy light foot in front of them (2 dice per base lovely lovely lovey munchy munchy) or could wheel off and charge the flank of those heavily armoured knights to distract them (1 dice per base ghastly ghastly ghastly don't want to do that)

Or mounted with the option to charge straight forward into (for example) medium foot or wheel and hit some elephants/camels as well.
