Hmm,

I can see the point but the really odd one is that if the knights had lost a base at impact they would have been able to expand into the same space... :?

Well it is just an odd situation.

There are plenty of situations where normal expansions are prevented by a combination of lack of space and the legal formation rules. Why should expanding in close combat be an exception?

If you want a rationalisation for the current situation, the other knight group obstructed the orderly feeding of the rear ranks of the knights into the melee, which was delayed as a result.

Fair enough,

We got it wrong in that the expansion was allowed but it didn't make a lot of difference :)

The knights were held at impact, went disrupted in melee then couldn't break off because of the second group of knights so went fragmented.
To make matters worse we then charged the knights in the flank with a BG of crossbowmen, they didn't break for the charge but did on impact and routed.
The second BG of knights failed it's CT for seeing the rout, then went fragmented when the first BG of knights routed throught them and finally the pursuing corssbows hit them in the flank breaking them. They routed and burst through another BG which again was hit in the flank by the crossbowmen, unfortunately the crosbowmen didn't break the third BG because if they had there was a fourth BG in the line of the charge and I think we could have taken that out too
