Breaking Through the Gazala line

Post by ExiledZebra »

Anyone else had massive complications trying to win this scenario (on default difficulty, colonel I believe)? I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to the desert campaign, but I believe the Germans managed to break through this line and push the allies back to El Alamein. If that's the case, it seems i'm unable to reproduce the outcome.

My usual tactic is to make my Tanks push around the huge minefield while my infantry (with 3 pioneres) break through to Bir Alaheim (I believe that's how it's called). Once the town is captured I try to push them all towards the right top most corner of the map. The problem is that this maneuver is time consuming and all the while, my troops are getting harassed by aircraft that I can't intercept since my fighters don't have the range (and are surprisingly ineffective, certainly against kittyhawks). Once I do get there i push the rear while my italian infantry try to take the front objectives (and fail considerably, seriously, static AT guns keep them at bay...). However, I always seem to run out of time to capture two objectives: the hill objective in the middle of the allied defense and the hugely defended plot of desert right next to Bir Alaheim (immediately northwest, it's defended by 2 howiters, antiaircraft, AT gun and 1 over strength infantry).

The worst part is that it would be easy to take over those objectives but i'm always stuck having to divert my attention to the retreating allies that pass by the two northeastern objectives (the ones next to the ridge line and have hilly terrain right in front of one town)

I'd like to know how you guys managed to beat this mission? Was there something you did in specific? How did you achieve air supremacy (if you actually did), because that seems to be the factor which hinders me the most.

Still haven't beaten it, even on Lieutenant!

Very hard scenario (some of the hardest WWIs are easier!)

The key is not a frontal assault. You should sweep around the line to the south and capture the isolated victory objective at the bottom of the map. Then move north to Knightsbridge objective. In the mean use your two transport ships to land troops behind the front just north of Gazala airports. Deploy a sizable force along the coastal road and advance toward Gazala. Move your Italian forces within sighting range of the Gazala Line objectives but don't attack until you have captured Gazala and can exploit the the pass in the escarpment north of the Gazala line. Also once Knightsbridge is captured you need to seize the airfiled to the east to finish the assault on Tobruk and Sidi Rezegh.
