Named Heroes not appearing in the Grand Campaign
I play the Grand Campaign. The game version is 1.22 (Dec 18 2013). But I've only purchased DLC 39, 40, 41 so far. I've never seen a named hero. Maybe I missed some conditions which trigger them. Do they appear on every difficulty?
my units have been awarded heroes which give +1 Movement, +2 Attack and so on, but that's something different if I understand correctly.

Re: Some advice for an ex PG-player please
Special reinforcement units usually show up on turn 2 or a subsequent turn of a DLC scenario. You will also typically see a message saying "You have been awarded a special reinforcement unit" or something like that. Most of them just show up automatically, although a few of them require certain conditions (like the 1941 Rudel reinforcement unit).
Note that the unit itself does not typically have a special name, but it joins your force already having a hero with better stats than a random hero.

Re: Some advice for an ex PG-player please
Just played the first scenario of DLC 39 again on General and I got nothing. I also watched parts of Renemesis Let's Play and I didn't see him getting Rudel as well. So I'm really confused now.
What I got in my campaign were SE Infantry and SE Gebirgsjäger, but no Ju87 (Rudel) or any other named heroes. I've seen this list viewtopic.php?f=121&t=42115, but as I said, I have never seen one of those guys mentioned there in my two campaigns.

This is really really strange. I have no idea what could go wrong and cause you to not receive the special hero units. I will split the posts from this thread and name properly so it's people may easier find it and maybe someone got an idea.

Re: Named Heroes not appearing in the Grand Campaign
Ok, I have solved this problem. This is what happened: When I first got the game, I had only the standard campaigns, no DLC. Then I bought the DLC 39 and in order to install it, the game had to be updated. As I did and installed the DLC afterwards. But of course all the modifications to the DLC couldn't have been applied, because at the time I did the update (to be able to install the DLC in the first place) the DLC wasn't installed. I didn't know that the grand campaign itself was modified by a patch. As I started playing I watched the Let's Plays of Deductor and Renemsis and they didn't get these named heroes, neither did I. But everyone on the forum kept talking about it, so I started to wonder... So in the future, if I install additional DLC I will surely remember to install the patch again every time afterwards. As with all IT/computer/software-issues, it is pretty obvious and logical, once you've figured it out.
If anyone else runs into this problem: When you start DLC 39 Poznan, in the South there is a City called Trebnitz and control point/city. If Trebnitz is german and the other flagged hex with the AT-gun ist a control point, you're playing the patched DLC. Rudel will arrive at the start of turn two. If Trebnitz is polish and the "control point" isn't a control point, but a city, you're playing the old DLC without named heroes.
So now I wonder If just keep playing my old campaign or start a new one and use the named heroes or just sell them because they are/get two strong. At least the game now works as intended.

Re: Named Heroes not appearing in the Grand Campaign
Ah so you have the single DLCs not the Mega Pack? As far i know the Mega Pack comes with sufficient patch level included to receive the new heroes while the single DLC do not. As you figured yourself out obviously if you patch the game and then install the DLC after they aren't patched even if the game displays itself as patched to the current version. You will be always on the safe side if you apply the newest patch again when something starts to behave strangely. It can't hurt but may fix some problems.

Re: Named Heroes not appearing in the Grand Campaign
I've recently purchased the 39, 40 and 41 DLCs
Before installing any of the DLCs I had v1.20 of the game.
Are you guys saying that I have to reinstall the latest patch each time I purchase one of the DLCs?
I too never even knew there were named heroes in the game until I started reading threads on this forum

I am not 100% sure it's needed but if you do reinstall the patch you are on the safe side.ashario wrote:I've recently purchased the 39, 40 and 41 DLCs

The patch when you install it simply can't patch stuff you do now own at that time. So if you patch your game and install a DLC after you patched it, you will get the DLC in a version it was released in which may not include the special heroes as they was introduced in a revamp of the DLCs when the mega pack was released. Some of the changes from the patch that come from the game side will be there but the scenario files where the heroes are included would be in the old version thus you won't receive them even if you are able to play in the 1.2 rules and use all the advanced options.
I am not 100% sure tho because in theory the patch could install the whole content even if you don't own it and just not unlock it and then the installation of the DLC could notice newer files and not replace them but i highly doubt it is the case. As i own all the expansions of PC i can't test it myself but the experience of the users here seems to speak against it.
So to make it short: Apply the latest patch again after every new DLC or expansion you install to be sure you are totally up to date. To prevent downloading the patch again and again just download it from here and keep it to be able to reinstall it if needed.
Re: Named Heroes not appearing in the Grand Campaign
Thanks, I'll give that a try
It does sound very strange that a DLC I bought last week from the Slitherine site would not be compatible/updated to the latest version of the game.

Re: Named Heroes not appearing in the Grand Campaign
I guess the installer files are not being updated as it would mean a lot of additional work and they remain at the version they was released at and the patch is bringing them up to date. This is actually quite common behavior in software distribution.ashario wrote:Thanks, I'll give that a try

Re: Named Heroes not appearing in the Grand Campaign
We'll agree to disagree on that one - I'm a software developer and I reckon its an oversight on what is otherwise a wonderful game
Re: Named Heroes not appearing in the Grand Campaign
I happen to be one as well and while i agree it would be better and easier for the customer to update the install packages most companies are not doing this. For example I had to reinstall my Microsoft Visual Studio 2012 a few days ago and despite me downloading the newest image from MSDN again (i couldn't find the bloody CD anymore anywhere, it must be hiding!ashario wrote:We'll agree to disagree on that one - I'm a software developer and I reckon its an oversight on what is otherwise a wonderful game

Re: Named Heroes not appearing in the Grand Campaign
Either way, reapplying the 1.22 patch after installing DLC does seem to enable the special hero units. A pity I didnt work this out until midway through the 41 DLC though!
