Sevastopol Assault tactics

Post by thgmusic »

Are there any preferred tactics for doing this kind of assault? I chose to go for the assault instead of the siege, assuming a higher prestige award even with a MV.

One thing I was thinking was to use my artillery strategically, beef up some of my Panzer III's to N's, and take my time, allowing retreat routes for units that get chewed up in the assault.

Other ideas?

Thanks for any intel you can provide! : )

Cheers,
Brad
Happy Gameplay!

Well, a city assault of this magnitude is a real slogfest. You are gonna have to take things real nice and slow, no room for fancy maneuvering here :( Make use of level bombers to soften things up (but watch out for that AA) Make combat teams containing at least 1 Pionere for the toughest assaults and make certain your artillery is supporting your assault troops at all times (the Stug III B is very good as support as it can take a pounding, always have 1 or 2 in your core at this time) Those Soviet fortresses are pretty damn tough, so you are gonna have to be careful around them. As far as i can remember the Red Airforce is pretty weak in this scenario, so you dont really need to bring a lot of fighter planes, just enough to escort your bombers safely.

Good luck with this one General, Ivan is one tough SoB, but play things right and you will drive him out of his hole 8) (there will be heavy casualties, just try and limit them as best you can)

I did the seige last time as I couldn't face doing a full assault on those fortresses.

I can only restate the advice to take your time, bring heaps of infantry and a lot of arty and something that can spot AA before you send in your planes. The recon Rudel is quite good for this - in a 110 he has 4 spotting and with a bit of careful placing can spot the AA when out of their range so you can blast them with your arty and pioneers before they start mincing your planes.

Incidentally, the time to build up a good reserve of infantry is in 1939 when there is a low experience cap. As long as you have prestige to spare, every time you get one unit to 2*, you can leave it in the reserves and bring in a new infantry unit. When that gets 2* experience, it goes into the reserves and you bring in a new one. There will be times when you need the exeprienced troops, but at this stage your infantry is generally so much better than the opposition that you can afford to have one or two recruits. While it may look a bit odd having six or more spare infantry units, it means that you can bring in a whole load of exeprienced pioneers or grenadiers or paras or gebirgsjagers for scenarios like seiges, territory grabs or mountainous scenery like Caucasus. Of course, this advice is probably not a lot of help now, but maybe next time....
