Field Fortifications

Post by Three »

Checking how these work regarding flank attacks as I've never really considered them before - the rules say you can't be charged in the flank if defending FF. I am assuming that this is only when you have placed a FF base at an angle between 90 and 180 degrees at the end under attack and not simply them all being in a line and the defending BG is lined up exactly?

I think you'll find that it is 'as written'. I.e. a flank attack on troops defending FF is considered as an attack on their front, the same as an attack which hits a BG's flank but is not a legal flank charge is considered a frontal attack.

I would suggest that this is because sufficient protection is given to the troops in the FF to cover their flanks as well.

Note, this does not preclude rear attacks - they are just more difficult.

The rule:
Troops defending FF cannot be charged in the flank/rear across the fortifications...

p 157, bp 3
So you have to have the FFs protecting your flank and/or rear. I assume the same rule applies for frontal defence, ie the defenders have to be in edge to edge contact with the FFs.

Found that bit late last night, so I would agree with you :D

Soooo, if a BG impacts into a flank, but part of the impacting BG contacts the side of the FF (assume the defenders are lined up corner to corner with the FF etc), would you think that that would be "across"?

I'm tending towards thinking it would be "across" as for game mechanics the front of the defending BG and the FF are treated as the same, bit like rear corner is a flank sort of thing?

I tend to the view that across implies that the FF comes between the chargers and their target. I think your first assumption was correct - there needs to be an FF actually protecting the flank.
