Orcish Arena

Post by miki »

This game engine would work incredibly fine for a fantasy wargame. Men, Elven, Orcs, trolls...

I would kill for playing an orcish campaign...

I agree, an orc mod would be very cool ;)

Surely there are enough strat games based around LOTR for this sort of thing ?? I am not a fan of the fantasy stuff so this would not interest me.

Hi!

That is a very interesting comment actually.

The engine would appear to be suitable for any period, although it could probably use bigger maps.

That does make the mind wonder a bit....

If the good people at Slitherine produced a development kit (unit editor, map editor, campaign editor) then I think the community could do the rest.

Yes, a fantasy version would have more appeal. But then they would want magic, flying creatures and undead.

Lot of extra coding there.

Perhaps just no flying, or treat them as just very fast units, a la warhammer flyers? And undead might have very high morale, but be weak in combat. Magic would simply be ranged attack/ leadership bonuses (like an extra rally).

Not based on Lotr, just generic fantasy units like orcs, elves, dwarfs, undead...

Celts with Orc skins, and minor tweaks in the unit stats, would work.

Their style of warfare is similar: headlong charge...

If only Wolf riders...

Orcs vs Romans

Post by honvedseg »

I'm pretty sure that the Romans saw the Celts as something akin to "orcs" anyway. "Wolf Riders" would just be a re-skinned cavalry unit. Magicians and Priests would be leader figures with similar area effects on morale, fighting ability, and endurance, etc. No big deal from a code standpoint. The only real dilema is: who would you get to play the part of the orcs for the live-acting animation development process?

I haven't played Arena, but I like this notion. If a thorough mod was developed along these lines it would probably be enough to get me to buy the game. But please carry it through and mod both sides, so we can have orcs versus elves, not to mention elves versus romans, no one deserves to be pounded by history's most formidable infantry more than those snooty gay-azz elves. If someone would do dwarves versus goblins that would be truly awesome, though I suppose it would screw up the engine to try to change the proportions of the soldiers.

I have longed for a good strategic 4x fantasy game with detailed tactical combat since the long ago days of yore when I used to play Sword of Aragon...

Alright slitherine, the community has spoken. Really, it looks like all is needed is a reskinning (some one who know computer drawing through and through) and a stat makeover to give the orcs/elves their own interest. Elephants could even = mumakil!

Okay:

For an Orc, get one of those professional wrestlers- they have approximately the right physique.

Goblin- get a kid actor.

Dwarf- Just shrink him vertically, and extend him horizontally.

Elf: Any long legged, slender girl will do here. Just make sure to give the in game grpahic male features, unless elves are in the habit of sending their females out to fight.

Ah, but re-skinning is really all you need for the orcs+elves (as they are both very humanoid).

Just take the celt, make them brown and craggly and give them some slight differences to keep them interesting.
For elves, re-skin archers + swordsmen from both sides and beef both up on attack. Then give them some light units and you're done! :P

But then, the tools might not be that user friendly :(

I can honestly say we would LOVE to do a fantasty Arena. I guess we shall have to see how well you guys like Legion Arena, and how many people would be interested in a fantasy expansion! Then we have to try and sell to publishers and retail...

Cheers

There is money to made there for sure. You could adopt a model similar to a certain UK based miniatures company and release each army as a standalone package to plug into a core system, then update it all every few years. I have wanted to do this my self and gotten as far as a partially completed rudimentary prototype in 2d and background into, but sadly lack the time, artistic skills and moola needed to do it justice. I hope you make a go of it. :D

Orc Arena

Post by honvedseg »

No, to adopt a business model along the lines of that certain UK miniatures and rules company, Slitherine would need to release periodic expansion packs for absolute "top dollar", each of which would delete certain other "obsoleted" units from your armies, while adding new combat options which would be unstoppable by anyone without the latest updates. The only way to replace the deleted units would be to buy the NEXT expansion, where they would become an advertising feature.

"Sorry, the Triarii aren't included in Seventh Edition, so you can't use them in online play. Wait another couple months, I hear the next release has NEW Triarii, and they come equipped with Vorpal Swords".
