Upcoming AAR ideas discussion
Hello folks,
as you might have seen in my AAR thread I'm planning to make a historical playthrough including all so far released scenarios across all campaigns in chronological order, following the real history (meaning no unhistorical paths).
I have a few ideas for this but I'd like to have your input as well.
- What difficulty level do you think I should use for the different campaigns (Allied Corps and GC after '42 would be BLIND, also most German losing path scenarios, but I don't plan on doing this Ironman anyway hehe)
- Are there any ideas for modding certain things to make them more historically accurate? I'm not talking about major overhauls here like Deductors mod or anything. I think that'd go a bit far. But I thought about things like making Kradschützen and Kavallerie recon units, so I can use them early on and later upgrade them to armored recon and making Kradschützen available in '39.
- Any ideas for changes to scenarios maybe? I know there were some issues in the GC, like italians in Stalingrad. maybe a minors booster pack and changing that scenario... or would that go too far?
Just throw in your ideas. I generally want to keep the gameplay pretty close to the vanilla 1.22 experience. So changing units or scenarios should have little to no impact on gameplay. So changing italian units for romanian ones should make sure the impact is minimal. Renaming some towns e.g. would be possible where issues are. Changing Kradschützen to Recon is also very limited in terms of impact I think, especially since I'll only have 1, max 2 of them. or should I turn them into a switchable unit? What should its values be then?
Any ideas are welcome, also in general for the let's play. Thanks!

Well about difficulty .. i personally would not chose it to high as you may end in a point where you are unable to carry on without cheating. If you chose the difficulty to low and have to much prestige you can always self limit yourself from buying all Tiger tank force.
As for the changes: Imho if the Kradschützen get recon movement they will be way to strong in the earlier part of the war until stronger infantry appear. Whats the point then in buying other infantry types (maybe except pioneers) when you can get the Kradschützen which get a built in transport making them mobile, cheap and being able to scout. As for changing the scenarios ... i personally never was bothered with the Italian in Stalingrad. Yes they wasn't there and you can replace them for the historical Hungarian but its quite a lot of work and game play wise nothing chance. Not like they are of any real fighting value anyway. Of course if you are bothered by the historical inaccuracy then feel free to do it, as i said i don't really think it will change anything game wise.

Well I wouldn't buy tons of Kradschützen. Also as recon units they wouldn't be infantry, so they'd be at a big disadvantage in close terrain. I think that'd balance it out. As for why.. well if I don't mod them, then I'll not use them. In 41 when they become available they're useless and as infantry I cannot upgrade them into anything good later. Recons would allow me to do that.

Re: Upcoming AAR ideas discussion
Right i forgot they are only available from 1941 on. If they were available from 1939 on, which they actually should be historically speaking, then making them recon could lead to using them exclusively as the only infantry type. Tho i still think it will make them one of the best recon units available. Especially late in the war the HA of most tanks goes through the roof while their SA remains in a civil range. This makes the soft Kradschützen possibly more resilient then the hard recons especially when you hide them in close terrain but i doubt it will matter much.
Re: Upcoming AAR ideas discussion
recon move is scary. So kradschutzen could in theory walk up to an artillery, then run back to close terrain on the same turn. Same applies to assaulting cities, it would be ridiculous. I was tempted to turn Oleh Dir into a Kradschutzen, the only thing preventing me was the fuel and also the weak air defense. Otherwise they seem quite formidable indeed.
As far as historical playthrough, I think it will be interesting. Will you be doing research to try to keep the units historical as well? That would be quite an undertaking... I don't know what difficulty to say, but I guess field marshal?

As I mentioned, I would only use max 1 or 2 of them. It'd be a mod just for the playthrough, not for releasing to anyone. and I can certainly limit myself. As for walking up to artillery and retreat, well a normal recon unit can do that as well can't it? With kradschützen being recon they no longer get the infantry bonuses, so they shouldn't be that devastating.

Difficulty: Start out lieutenant as maybe many newbies do, generate some nice prestige in your bank, of course, and as war years go by with success you can take promotions to colonel, general, field marshal, etc., with some grandiose promotion ceremony that only you could dream up for us.......along with a greater challenge of the higher difficulty level.

Oh I dunno, I've already played GC 39-42 with lots of DV even on Rommel in the end. So I think fieldmarshall is a given

I have no idea what bonuses any units get against anything, having used only the ipad version so a lot of advanced concepts are left in the dark for me :O.
