I have a feature request

Post by Belanos »

I'm sure everyone at Proxy is familiar with the BUG mod for Civ 4. One feature it has, which would be very nice to also have in this game, is an overlay you can place on the map to show you the locations of any possible city sites. It can be a bit confusing with the hex system to figure out the best place to put a city so that it doesn't compete too much with another location. Being able to place the overlay on the map beforehand would make things a lot easier for the player.

I try to put new cities at a distance of 6 hexes,
not less (to have less share of resources) nor more (6 is the speed of planes to reinforce a town in one turn from near towns).

I'm still trying to decide what the best distance is. In the last game I played, I was placing them 5 tiles apart, but there were a lot of spaces between the cities. I don't think any city will ever be able to expand it's border completely by the end of the game so it seems kind of pointless giving them that room.

PS: I just checked my starting city in the game I just played and while it had spread it's borders completely, it was only using 10 tiles, most of the area was unused. So it seems kind of pointless to give my cities all the space they can get. I think it's better to pack them in a bit tighter in order to make them more cohesive. Certainly the cities I founded later on will never expand fully.

I tend to place my cities so that I can cover the most special resources with the smallest amount of cities...

Maybe it was just the game I was playing, but that really wasn't an issue for me. By the time the alins were done with I had the continent all to myself so I didn't have to worry about maximizing my city placement. I could have it all. In fact, it was down to just two of us, with the entire planet pretty much mine for the taking.

But getting back to my feature request, at the very least I'd like to be able to place some markers on my map if I decide upon a location for some future city. Like the ones that Civ 4 used.

I only played a bit of Civ 4, but in Alpha Cenauri I would place a "landmark" and name it something like "base" on squares that I wanted to remember to colonize. It did come in handy and I simply deleted it right before arriving with a colony pod.

I don't remember the system Alpha Centauri used but the concept is similar. It would be very handy for planning out future city sites. Better yet would be a system like that used in BUG mod for Civ 4. But I guess you won't be familiar with that one. It's a great tool for planning out your locations since you can place an overlay on the map showing the full boundaries of a city. But a simple marker would help as well.
