Large units in combat

Post by pugsville »

Do large units in combat always count as large units (number of dice) regardless of the number of bases in contact?

With shooting they can count as small, but is combat different? Cannot find any reference in the rules to anything similar in combat.

So Large units fighting that had only one base in contact still counts as large unit for number of dice? This is my reading of the rules but did I miss something.

Page 57 last paragraph on the right:

Large Infantry and Cavalry units can also support themselves...deeper Tactical formation 3 bases deep. In this formation the unit fires, and fights in combat with the same dice allocation as a small unit.

It counts as a large unit always for hits against it.

Large units do not get the -1 on hits taken if they are wavering i believe.

Firing: A wavering large unit does not get the -1 to hits.
Combat: A wavering unit does get the -1 to hits.

Firing: A wavering large unit does not get the -1 to hits.
Combat: A wavering unit does get the -1 to hits.
Correct.

The reasoning for this is that casualties from firing usually usually affects a small area of the unit (or often a single battalion), with panic spreading rapidly through the rest.
In melee there is much more confusion with casualties in a single area less likely to be noticed by the rest of the unit.
