Prestige Income Strategy in DLC

Post by endur »

I'm curious what strategies people are using to build prestige income in DLC.

I'm currently playing the GC eastern scenarios.

I don't over-strength troops.

I do use elite replacements, except when I'm at or near the exp cap, then I'll use green troops if its only 1 or 2 strength points (keeping my xp near cap). My artillery and aircraft build xp quickly, infantry and tanks are slower to gain xp.

I try to use the cheapest transports (trucks, etc.).

I'm sure other people are much better at saving prestige and have other techniques.

Prestige is really tight in the later and extremely difficult DLC, (45 West is really giving me a hard time right now) so I thought I'd help contribute to this topic!

Some units are important to over-strength, they will actually save you prestige. The killing power and high initiative of German armor means that an elite, over-strength SE tank Panther or Tiger can and will inflict such massive damage on targets that they simply don't even return fire. SE tanks and fighters are the best bet for being prestige savers when they are highly elite and highly over-strengthed. Hope you've been accumulating some elite units with a score of heroes from the early DLC! ;)

Artillery is another candidate for over-strength, as the nature of their attacks means they always attack with impunity, but the overwhelming and very historical Allied air power in the later years of the wars really hammers poor artillery units. Now I remember why I designed so many scenarios with lots of Allied fighters and strategic bombers, but tried to make enemy tactical bombers somewhat more rare by comparison!

Infantry, with their enormous casualty rates, are the worst candidates for over-strength. There are exceptions to this though, the special infantry heroes like Oleh Dir can really be worth investing in.

Also, as a somewhat less well known tip: reinforcements are cheaper during the deploy phase.

Going from 1 to 10 strength during the deploy phase is free with regular replacements. The price of elite reinforcements is reduced during the deployment phase.

Lastly, tips from this thread:

I still use infantry all the time, even in 1943 and even in Manstein. They just don't survive very long though. Just like my poor recon cars. :(
I only have two of those as well, but I went through 30 of them before I finished the campaign. ;)

1 brand new 10 strength StuG IIIG can absorb 2-4 attacks by 16 strength tanks before it dies. That's 32-64 dice rolls that aren't being rolled against my more valuable and expensive units such as my veteran artillery

Buy, die, buy, die, buy, die. Infantry, anti-tank, and recon cars are the units I used to blunt the deadly AI counter attacks that really show up in force in DLC 1943. They're cheap and other than just expendable, they are extremely effective when used properly. And then after the AI butchers my poor vanguards, the Stukas and Panthers swoop in and take vengeance in the order of some 300+ AI tank units destroyed! (637 jumped to up 961)
