Did You Know?

Post by spedius01 »

Ave,

The following should be viewed and read with "tongue in cheek".

Did you know - that LEGION ARENA is an anagram of I RANGE ALONE? Not a lot of people know that!

Did you know - if you, through promotions, award Legionaries the Grand Order of MASTER DODGER, and via equipment a pair of Hermes' winged Grade 4 BOOTS, that you have increased their agility from 10 to 50? Sounds like a cross between Oliver Twist, Monty Python and a cheetah? Can you imagine the little guys chasing down elephants? Mind you, when they caught them they would just be trampled into strawberry jam, no anti-elephant skill!! Not a lot of people know that!

Did you know - the commands, issued and accessed by the HALT, SIGNAL and RALLY buttons, are FREE? My learned friend sum1won informs us of this, in a recent post! Not a lot of people (including me) know that!

Did you know - Sir Michael (ZULU) Caine (the British actor) is alleged to have uttered these immortal phrases to bewilder and amuse his friends? He has always denied this, of course! Not a lot of people know that!

If you've been inspired, and managed to get your tongue out of your cheek, by the three examples above, please post your own, "Legion Arena" specific, "did you knows" and anagrams, that not a lot of people will know!

Vale

Did you know -

That if you spin the Legion Arena CD backwards, it plays the Slitherine Slingers cover version of "Stairway to Heaven", with Iain on vocals...?

No, really, he sounds just like a young Robert Plant.

Hey, would these eyes lie to you? <innocent>

Disciplined Formations!!

Post by spedius01 »

Ave guys,

Thanx for your replies, very funny, almost really!

Did you know -

if you, through promotions, award Auxilia (Militia, Spearmen & Archers too) with the Disciplined Formations promotion they move way up the abilities table to be on a par with Legionaries? Having chosen this option, if you check on the next deployment screen, three additional buttons have appeared when you select either one of the above troop types. Look at their disciplined attack, defence and balanced stats, they are identical to the Legionaries'!! The tool tip says, "The discipline doctrines are easier for the General to control and move around the battlefield". Is that an understatement or what? I had no idea what a difference that promotions option could make!!! I believe I understand now why the Auxilia don't get extra javelins or become expert throwers, they're already strong enough!! Are they now Light-Medium Infantry, an entirely new classification??? I thought that, having taken this option, Auxilia may lose their abilities in rough ground and woods, but apparently not, they're even more awesome!! If Auxilia are this good, it makes you wonder how good the other three will be with this skill? I do understand that these stats are added to your basic stats, so, if you start off weak, this promotion won't make your units into supermen!

Not a lot of people (me included, until yesterday) know that!

Vale

Uh, they would be on par with the legion stats- except that legionaires also get the bonus from disciplined formations, giving them a massive bump as well.

Ave sum1won,

You're not wrong!

How's life treating you, as busy as always?

Have you got any more of your useful tips for us?

Ave sum1won,

Yes, you did post it here, either on page 2 or 3.
You mentioned a chaperone?

Did you know...

Did you know that while your units will not attack routed enemy units, cavalry will charge through a routed enemy unit, and doing so inflicts massive trample kills?

This isn't easy to set up, and it honestly happened by accident the first time. You have to get your cavalry past the enemy line, and then turn them around and attack from behind.

I had my Scouts on an Envelop order, and they went past the enemy flank. Then I hit Signal and they went charging off to an empty corner of the map. To make things worse, my Legate was with them...

Eventually, the Legate (or maybe his horse) figured it out, and led the Scouts around in a sweeping 180 to charge the enemy from behind.

Meanwhile my best Militia unit, in a defensive formation, was easily holding off two enemy light infantry units. One of those two enemy units routed about the time my Legate got his thumb out.

So as my Scouts, led by Our Intrepid Young Hero, came sweeping up to slam into the enemy rear, they went right through the routing enemy light infantry unit, and a whole flurry of golden horseshoes floated up.

Ave possum,

No, I didn't know that very useful tip. Thank you for an entertaining and thought provoking article.

This is exactly the sort of items that members, like me, would like to read about. Your discoveries and experiences gained whilst playing Legion Arena. I'm sure we all would be most grateful if the more experienced members could share their thoughts and ideas regarding them with the rest of us.

In a recent game, after having read possum's article, I tried to order my Scouts to interdict a fleeing enemy unit but wasn't allowed to. I have a couple of questions for the game developers. Why can't you pursue and kill routed troops? Why can't you rally routed troops?

On the other hand, was it Crecy or Agincourt where the French knights trampled some of their own crossbowmen?

"Serves the knaves right for getting in the way of their betters"

(cough cough)

I have to say, the episode in the post above, with my Legate galloping bravely off into a corner of the map, reminded me painfully of just how useless junior officers can be...

"I say, follow me, lads!"
(gallop gallop gallop)
(15 minutes later)
"I say, ahhh, sergeant, that is, ahhh, do you have your map?"
