Battle of the River Blehh!

Post by Blathergut »

Well, my 1812 French, loaded up with large conscript units and artillery + cavalry attachments ran head long into Austrian grenadiers and Russians with more artillery guns than could be counted.

>cavalry attachments are useless against Austrians...I don't think there was one instance Austrian dice were reduced. We faced 3 artillery units plus infantry with artillery attachments or infantry in squares
(24 points that could have been much more effectively used)

>conscript formations + river crossing requiring CMT is not a good recipe

>artillery attachments added one die in places, yes, but were they worth the 40 points used over two French divisions? OUr fire was so reduced by enemy horse all along the line that it seemed to be little extra with no noticed gains in hits

>exceptional charismatic corps commander???....way worth the points!...won initiative by 3+ so he only cost me 10 pts and DID pull off one successful rally reroll

>3 other charismatic divisional commanders?...the Italian one with a division consisting of 3 small conscript units was worth it...he kept pulling those babies back from the brink!
...the rest...didn't earn their schnapps! (20 points probably better spent elsewhere)

So I could probably take back out 84 points. Maybe put back 2 arty attachments in a couple large conscript inf units. Have to see what I can get for 64 points!

I think 3 charismatic commanders is a bit much.
1 for sure. 2 maybe.

One thing I like about the rules/lists: your army can vary tremendously battle to battle.

If you knew that you're up against unreformed Austrians who can't skirmish then why did you buy the cavalry attachments in the first place?

In all honesty I never had much chance to shoot at any French units with my infantry. He out cavalried me with 5 or 6 units to my 2 and had the majority on his left where he was going to make his effort. I had 2 large average drilled units there that spent most of the game in square with the Frogs keeping back to at least 3 MU just so I could not get any shots off even with my attachments. I had 8 guns in total, 1heavy, 1 horse 1 medium for the Austrians and a med for the Russians. Never run so many guns before, and they did all the shooting (with the exception of the med artillery with the Grenadiers that never had a target in sight due to numerous woods all over the french side of the table) with the exception of defensive shooting cavalry that attempted to charge my squares. So yes the points for Cav attachments did not factor in in this particular game.

I am willing to try taking on the same force with my Mixed division, which only has 2 batteries, 1 med for Austria and 1 for Russia, but has 4 cav units and a Cossack unit with the Russians. Still have not figured out how to use Cossacks yet though. This army has jaegers and Grenzers so the cav attachments will likely pay off, and only the Russians can be large so less chance to shake off that 1 hit every time. I doubt I will have such an easy time with this army.
