Skirmisher Flank/Rear Charges

Post by BrianC »

I don't have my rulebook with me right now but can someone tell me; do skirmishers charging non skirmishers cause that BG to drop a cohesion level if a flank or rear charge? I want to say no but am not sure. I thought skirmishers could only affect other skirmishers in such a way

Thanks

Your thinking is correct - they do not cause a drop in cohesion level on non-skirmishers they hit in the flank or rear.

Thanks Nik.

But if skirmishers get in behind a BG in melee and it must rout and the enemy skirmishers are in the way then the BG routing whether HF or not will be destroyed as I could find nothing in the rules that indicated the type of enemy blocking a rout. page 100. In my last game I lost all my skirmishers which allowed my Carthaginian opponent to get to the flank and harrass my troops. I can see this as a powerful weapon if i understand the rules right.

Yep a good use of skirmishers is to wipe out enemy routers so they can never rally

You can do this by surrounding them and also LH particaulary are useful charging routers and chasing them to death. Especially good tactic if someone has a Sup BG that is near full strength that has broken through CTs or if there is an enemy IC around who finds rallying fairly easy.

Hey Si,

So by getting in behind an enemy BG in melee so that you block its rout path is a way where LF can destroy non skirmishers if they rout. That is pretty powerful. I just wanted to clarify that skirmishers could have this kind of impact if it blocked a rout move, I wasn't sure if it destroyed a heavier BG.

And playing the Roman I don't have any LH unfortunately, they do look like fun to use. Don't know how to balance the cavalry imbalance other than taking away some foot. Still interesting decisions and one that is historical.

You can also use LF to jam mounted that are fighting your steady legions and will have to break-off. If they can't break off they go down a level and you can probably jam 2 or 3 BGs of cavalry/knights with a single BG of LF (assuming it's got at least 6 stands)
