Unit Combat

Post by MrPlow »

Hi, I am thinking of Purchasing the game but I have a few questions first. I noticed in the screenshots there are rivers and other physical features on the map. Do these features add any defensive or offensive bonuses to units. For example if you place a unit on one side of a river, and the enemy attacks, does the defender get a bonus because the attacker has to cross the river? Also, I was wondering if someone could send me a .pdf of the owners manual so I could get a sense of the game because there is no PC demo to try.
Thanks,

No terrain gives an offensive bonus. Many give defensive bonuses. Rivers, rough, mountains, fortresses, cities, etc all make it easier to defend (as does sitting in place for a long time (aka digging in)).

Actually IIRC rivers do not give the defender a bonus but attacker a penalty.

I'll gladly send you a manual but I think it might be better to wait a while to see whether the devs feel it's alright or not.

Oops. You're right. Rivers give an attack penalty instead of a defense bonus.

Hmm...now, I'm wondering if there's a specific reason that it's a penalty instead of a bonus (since as far the game mechanics go I don't see a difference) or it's just semantics? :)

Well it seems logical. Crossing the river rather puts the attacker at danger instead of protecting the defender.

Thank you all for the help, I really appreciate it. Also, if the devs agree, I would love for someone to send me a manual.
You all are the best, thanks!

I'll throw out my $.02...

It's a great $50 expense, I wouldn 't bother waiting for a manual to make the decision. I've wasted $50 or more on many computer games, and I don't think I've ever got more use out of the money than I have with this game.

And, just to disclose all biases, I have absolutely nothing to do with the programmer/distributer of the software.

Yep, this game is fun and very addictive. I was feeling for a sequel in the Pacific but it seems we will have to do with Napoleon!

Thankyou guys!
I am glad you like the game. As they say, one happy customer means 10 more and I hope that the word spread better on this series and attract more ppl to our community. Long term there is a bunch of games we like to do, but we can only do one at the time hence the Napoleon game now :)
