Oleh Dir upgrade to Grenadier

Post by janscas »

Hi all!

I was wondering if upgrading Oleh Dir (Move +3 Init +3) to a grenadier is a good move ... or not.

In the eary years can be usefull to have it as it is, but in the late war a grenadier could stand for much worst sittuations than Gebirgsjager.

What do u think?

I always upgrade Oleh Dir to Grenadier in 1941. You only loose one MP (he has got five instead of six now), but you earn more combat strength and a slightly higher initiative (he has a bonus on that one, too).

If you prefer mobility, you might change him into cavalry or Kradschützen. I never tried that, but you never know... ;)

Oleh Dir I always change to Grenadier, but I don't give him any other transport. This makes replacements much cheaper as I invariably use him as Shock troops with consequent high casualties.
A mobile hard-hitting unit, what's not to like?

Actually, for the same reasons, I changed Oleh Dir to Engineer.

Didn't know transport affect the replacements cost. Thanks!

His stats are game breaking and ruin the balance of so early in the game. I really don't understand the decision to add such ridiculous units. I edit his stats to +1 movement, +2 INI (and also for the rest of special units to have +3 points in total for 39/40)

You need to edit the scenario for the mission where the unit appears, with the scenario editor (they are in the DLC39 folder, for Oleh Dir I think it's the second scenario). After you open the scenario, you can see the bonus unit at the edge of the map and you can edit the hero stats. Then save the scenario and that's all. Better make a backup first just in case.

I wouldn't go as far as call him game breaking. Is he overpowered at least early in the war? Yes hell he is and if you could buy a whole army of them it would be game breaking but having such a single unit is OK imho. It certainly offer the player a big advantage but even an Oleh Dir can't win the war alone. :)

As of upgrading him later in the war .. i guess it depends a bit. For me his biggest advantage is his huge mobility. 6 points of alpine movement, and as such not being hampered at all by rough terrain, gives him ungodly mobility. Yes his fighting power is lacking a bit, especially late in the war, but i usually stick with him as Gebirgsjäger.

@dragos - Thanks! Yes, Oleh Dir is in the second scenario Lodz.

@Tarrak - I'm also keeping Oleh Dir as a gebirgsjager. Frankly, I didn't use gebirgsjager at all in my previous campaigns, just grenadiers, pionieres and fallschirmjager but I don't plan to change Oleh Dir to another type. I do like his mobility.

I have used Oleh Dir as pioneer, grenadier and gebirgsjager. If I have spare prestige (much rarer now using 1.21) I will sometimes change him to whatever I need according to the scenario. I haven't yet tried Kradschutzen or Cavalry, but it sounds quite an interesting choice.

Yes i tend not to use normal Gebirgsjägers as well as with just three movement points they are to slow to keep up with the rest of the army and if you buy them a transport you lose the alpine movement advantage so it makes them pretty pointless. Oleh Dir fixes nicely the first problem so he stays without any transport and just zooms through the battlefield afoot.

I didn't also understand why to make the GC's with such "free" über-units even easier as it is. And for game desing I see this system also not a good choice because the player has not do anything to get them - therefore the enjoyment feeling is also small. I always deleted them on the spot.

I think, in the original format the GC's are designed for casual players only: total easy even on the hardest levels, world war 2 theme is only a background immersion point as most units stats and availability and the appearence of minor nations in most scenarios don't reflects history. For me it was a total dissapointment: no problem with that, but it had to be written in the description to let know for hardcore history-liking players to not await such things from the GC's. What I extra don't understand that the vanilla campaing was really hard and therefore challenging - what has been changed since then...?

Luckily with my modding knowledge I could modify the scenarios and the campaign the make it challenging and more historical but I don't think after I bought something it should be my duty to do so.

Heh, Uhu, judging by your Italian Campaign, you're just a masochist (if you balanced it for yourself) or a sadist (if you balanced it for others), so your opinion is to be taken with a grain of salt.

I like the basic idea of heroes, but the game systems are too limited to make proper use of it. Oleh's movement bonus can come in handy at times, but by and large, in most scenarios you cannot anticipate where exactly situations in which this bonus would give you a REAL advantage will arise, so you end up using it only in few situations of opportunity whenever or wherever they present themselves.
And there's so many heroes, they really begin to blend in with each others and the normal units.
There's only one hero I used very often and explicitly - I found myself not rarely tinking: "I need Rudel for this job!".
He's really cool, but still not invulnerable/infallible, and even if he were, there's only so much a single unit can do.
Still, for me, he was a welcome reminder of the old Panzer General days, where each Stuka could wreak havoc like now only Rudel can do. Sometimes, I even directly assault AA guns with him.

Oleh Dir is definitely not a super unit. He is mobile but not that wonderful on attack. He is just infantry after all. Put him out in the open and he will soon be history. I personally use him w/o transport to keep his replacement costs down.
Rudel is a super unit, and deservedly so. This man was probably the most effective pilot of WWII. Even after being shot up repeatedly and even losing part of his legs he was up flying still with casts on his stumps. He was literally a one man wrecking crew. Remember he was also the first man to fly the tankbusting Stuka Ju-87g in combat.
Heroes add flavor to the game. I enjoy them immensely.
