Another Version of Morat 1476

Post by Yuknoom »

While appreciating fogman's effort, I thought I would try an alternative approach to representing this most intriguing battle, the decisive battle of the SWars between the Swiss Confederacy and the Burgundians of Charles the Bold.
Designer's notes -
After the defeat at Grandson, the Burgundians returned and laid siege to the lakeside town of Morat (represented by the fields in the upper left), to draw the Swiss out.
Charles expected the Swiss to advance down the clear terrain between the lake and the large wooded hill (the Bois de Domigne). He had set up a palisade with ditches (the Grunhag) on high ground flanking that approach, which he manned with longbows. The Swiss, however, did not wish to simply drive him off again, they intended to encircle him and destroy his army, so they advanced through the circuitous and difficult route over the Bois. In addition, half way through the hill, they halted to say some prayers, hand out some awards and stand around in the rain for three hours.
Assuming there would be no attack that day, Charles went back to his camp and stood down his army. As the Swiss surprise attack struck Charles sent in his army piecemeal and almost his entire force was destroyed. The longbows were reported to be largely ineffective due to the rain.
The Burgundian player has some challenging decisions to make here- whether to attempt to pin up some of the emerging Swiss, or to try and set up a defensive line using the central hill and the palisade, made more complex by the disarray of his forces.

This is a historical battle that I love. Can't wait to download it and play it. I love to see that such an iconic event is getting well-deserved attention here. Thanks for sharing.

Unofortunately there seems to be a minor glitch in that it has too many 'overall leaders'. When positioning troops, I didn't see where you distinguish overall from sub commanders. If anyone could advise I would appreciate it.

There was another glitch with the zipped folder that I downloaded, as it contains some 'extra' files that, even when deleted, will prevent the unzipped scenario from appearing in the custom menu. In short, the download folder is strangely corrupted.

Concerning leaders, if I understand you correctly here, in the Edit Scenario map, you must right-click on a leader unit to edit leader details. You have to choose "C-in-C" (which is default for leaders), sub, or ally. If there is more than one C-in-C for a given side, the scenario will not load, even though it will appear listed in the custom menu. I couldn't get that far, as it does not appear in my custom menu for the reason adduced above.

I've fixed the leaders (in version 1.02), so we should be fine on that count.

I'm a bit puzzled about the file download issue. I've tried downloading it on my computer and have been able to play the scenario. It is my first time submitting a scenario, and so it is entirely possible that I'm submitting it in a less that user friendly manner. I thought that I'd describe exactly what I've done to access the scenario, and if you can give me any tips on streamlining the process I'd greatly appreciate it.

Opening the zipped Morat 1476 v1.02.zip file in the produces a folder called Morat 1476 v1.02, which contains a folder titled data, which in turn contains four files (game-fixed.xml, scenario0.fogsg, scenario1.fogsg and ui.xml). If I copy the Morat 1476 v1.02 into my FieldofGlory Scenarios folder (in the Slitherine directory), I find that I can now access the scenario from the field of glory application.

Apologies for the conclusion, and thanks for helping me troubleshoot!

I downloaded it the usual way, but as you can see from these snipping tool captures, there are additional files (the MACOSX folder and the .DS Store file) that appear in the downloaded folder. The scenario will not appear in the custom scenario menu even after deleting these additional files. I've never seen this problem before. It's a puzzlement. :?:

it works for me. i copied the zip file into the scenario folder and unzipped it there (using the 'extract here' command). it does create one additional folder (mac ox) and file inside the morat folder; not quite sure what that does but I left it alone and the scenario does appear in the custom list.

yuknoom, friendly advice. i think you rushed into this. you can actually edit the names and strengths of the units, and indeed most everything else. and you could do better than a 19th century biography of charles, and oman, which is nearly as old. it really helps also to play a few hundred multi player games to get a good sense of what units do and how they interact. i didn't do anything until i felt i knew the game's mechanisms inside out by playing a large amount of multi player matches and becoming good at it, even though i only bought the game to play historical scenarios originally. and ended making scenarios myself because the stock scenarios are too unbearably inaccurate for a hardened grognard as myself. good luck on your future works.
