How is random number generated?

Post by timek28 »

I've been restarting mission 4 times in a row now dissatisfied by my tactics. Enemy always attacks the same units and those attacks always yield the same results, even if there are 10 attacks in one turn. I think that this kind of behavior should not happen. I know that RNG cannot be random but still having the same combat results over and over upon mission restart is just completely unrealistic. It seems that RNG seeds from the same value over and over again.

Do you have dice combat activated, under advanced options ? If yes, then that options produces excatly the behaviour you describe - combat always leads to the same results, as predicted. If not, then your experience definetly differs from mine. I have from time to time reloaded the autosave file of the computer side to save a valuable core unit from being killed by an (un)lucky stroke. Combat outcome was always different.

Are you fully patched?

In the early versions (certainly the release version but I'm not sure which patch changed it) the random seed was set so no matter how many times you reloaded you would get the exact same die rolls in the exact same order, you could of course mix up the order in which you performed attacks to change individual combat results but you always go t the same string of random numbers

I have game patched up to 1.21. I have never seen this behavior before, or I just didn't pay close attention. What option should I use (instead of dice) to produce random results for real?

Well in the advanced options screen you get to pick from Normal, Limited (Dice chess) or None (chess)

Normal is full on random and can produce crazy results (predicted 10-0 and get 0-10 for an extreme example)...limited will reduce the randomness so you wont get such extreme results but the predictions wont be 100% accurate and None means what ever the combat predictions are is what you'll get EXCEPT IIRC you can still get rugged defence results which will obviously effect the result

So you want to pick from the first two options if you want some randomness

Hmm... So you'r telling me that if I pick first option I can get my Tiger2 with 5 stars blown away with green infantry? :D

I want random results but within some limit. Say if on restart I always get the same array of results I would accept those results with some digression (+/- 1 or 2 SPs) on each restart. Of course rugged defense should be also somewhat random. If I understood you well I should chose Limited option in order to get this behavior?

Well its highly unlikely for a 5star Tiger 2 to get blown away by green infantry but yeah its not impossible but like wise its possible that your green infantry can perform equal miracles lol

But from what you've said I'd say you'd like the limited option .

I always play on full random as can be fun! But then there's also steps to take to reduce the chances of extreme result (artillery/strat bombing for suppression and mass attacks mainly)

Let me cite from the thread Custom and Advanced Difficulty Settings;
Combat Random (Chance):
Normal - There is a chance that the prediction is considerably off and you are either lucky or unlucky. The possible deviation could be as high as 100%.
Limited - There is a chance that the prediction is somewhat off, but not by more than 20%.
None - Everything happens as predicted. Random chance only occurs with Rugged Defense.
