The Few, the Proud, the Fallschirm und Gebirgs Artillerie

Post by hs1611 »

Kameraden, I am looking for a few good men, volunteers only, for my Fallschirm und Gebirgs Artillerie und FlaK units.

I have already made some rough icons. Being lazy and without graphical skills I simply used the icons already on the game and added some sort of identification badge. Well, not really a badge, but it's the best I can do.

EDIT 13-11-24 - Replaced previous icons with new ones with the shadows corrected. Big Unit icons are not very good, but it's the best I can do. All icons made from vanilla PzC icons, just "cut" and "paste", with the exception of the 2 cm Pak units which used vanilla Infantry icons plus the 2 cm Pak icon made by guille1434.

As for stats I simply made the units airdropable (fallschirm) or gave them 2 movement points and mountain movement type (gebirgs) and reduced their ammo by 1/3.
As for the Panzerjäger mode of the FlaK gun I still haven't decided what attack/defense stats to give them.
I would like to read your thoughts on this. Bear in mind they were used against armor and infantry both.

What I would really like was to have some mortar units to replace the 7.5 cm guns. At least for the Fallschirmartillerie. That or some of their air dropable guns. Something like this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7.5_cm_Lei ... C3%BCtz_40.
For the Gebirgsartillerie this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7.5cm_Gebi ... C3%BCtz_36 could be used.

If someone has or wants/knows how to make this units it will be much appreciated.
Thanks.

EDIT 2 13-11-24 - New mortar units.

Fallschirm unit made by guille1434. The Big Unit icon (Yes, it's not very good, actually it's just plain ugly. It was made by me and not by guille1434) is simply part of the original unit icon, cut and resized.

ImageImage

The Gebirgs unit uses LuftWFJ44's excelente Wehrmacht HW Infantry with mortar, deletes the soldier with the rifle and adds a Gebirgsjager from the vanilla icon.
Big Unit icon was made, by me, in the same lazy, incompetente way as the Fallschirm Big Unit icon.

ImageImage

Any help with proper values for these units will be greatly appreciated.
I am thinking of giving them the same movement points and type as respective infantry units and big rate of fire.
No idea what to use for attack/defense values.

Hi hs1611,

please check the Guille thread: Page 1 you will find paras with artillery, and pages 2,3 you could use also some stuff for the mountain troops. Cut out the existing soldiers and set some mountain troops on it please.

Greetings!

Hello, thanks for the sugestion.
I actually downloaded and modified Guille's icons, plus made Bigunit icons, for those units.
Since I wasn't satisfied with the results i made these. They're not perfect but I'm satisfied with them.
What I would like is some suggestion on what statistics to use.
Also, if someone has made icons for actual real airborne or mountain guns I would prefer to use those.
Or better yet, mortars. Then I wouldn't feel guilty of giving the mountain units more movement points or the "para" trait to the airborne ones.

Hello asuser.
I followed your advice and re-did my former modifications based on Guille's icons.
They do look better than the ones on my first post and than the ones on my previous attempts.
What do you think?

Hey,

they look much better now. The most important thing is that you like it also and to try new techniques...

Think about two tiny details please:

The sun comes in PC everytime from right, so the shadows have to fall to left. One soldier is a little bit less for the artillery, I would add at minimum one more soldier (kneeling or standing, holding a artillery/AA grenade). Additional you could add an ammo crate. Keep up your work and have fun!

Good work, Hs1611!
May be you can add the parachute canopy to the big icon?

My idea was, from the beginning, to implement air-portable (note the difference between air-portable, and air-droppable) light artillery and AA units to the "Fallschirmjager corps"... The Parachute infantry would make the drop, and then, possibly with the help of air support units take a rearguard airfield to allow the air-portable units to land. The resulting icons would have been very similar to the graphics you made!

Also, I plan to add sometime in the not so distant future icons for the LG40 and LG41 7,5 and 10,5 cm recoilless guns... Those where first used by the Fallschirmjager in the Crete invasion. That would be really "air-droppable" artillery units... (their ammo value would necessarily be low).

The Gebirsjager artillery and AA units are a logical development of the same concept, but I had not thought about it... A nice addition!

I do not have good images of a German mountain gun or howitzer to try to make an icon out of it, sadly...

Another idea I have, is to include an icon with those light guns in tow by a Kleines Kettenkradkraft (Sdkfz.2) to give the airborne artillery an AA units some measure of mobility! Indeed, that small vehicle was designed to be used by airborne troops and towing light guns... That gun-in-tow icon can be made as a "switch" to the gun in fire position icon, that way, you will not have to "drop truck" when transporting the unit by air...

@asuser - Shadows, yeah, it's even worse than that.

If you look closely all the guns shadows are falling to the left, therefore correct. But all the soldiers shadows are falling to the right, which is wrong.

That's because all I did was "copy" "paste" from already available units.
For some reason, in PzC all original units icons are turned to the left with shadows to the left, except infantry, which are turned to the right, with shadows to the left.
So, when I cut the troopers and flip them horizontally (I'm using Paint.NET by the way), so they'll be looking in the same direction that the guns are turned to, they get turned 180º, pointing to the left, but so do their shadows, which will now be falling to the right.
Doing that any better is beyond my skills. I guess I could simply try to remove the soldiers shadows, but then I might remove some parts of their bodies.

Adding ammo crates or soldiers holding artillery shells would be great but, since those icons don't exist already, so no "copy" "paste", that's also beyond my skills.

Anyway guille1434 just said he is planning to add real airdropable guns eventually, which is what I really wanted but don't have the skills to make, so I guess I'll just wait a while. Meanwhile I'll make do with these.
I'm still not sure what stats to use on the 2 cm Pak's. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Never mind. I just figured how to do the shadows properly, I think. I will try to do it on the weekend and post it on the first post.

Thanks for taking the time to comment!

Yes, that should be fairly easy. I'll try it when I next have free time, probably not before the weekend.
My idea was, from the beginning, to implement air-portable (note the difference between air-portable, and air-droppable) light artillery and AA units to the "Fallschirmjager corps"... Yes, I saw your icons and your explanation for them. I thought it a neat solution, with the gun changing to an infantry unit for the air transport.
But my intentions were to do some "air-droppable" units. That's why I don't really like using the 7.5 cm gun. It was not "air-droppable". But it's the best I can do.
You, on the other hand...

That's what I really wanted to use. That or some mortars.
So I'll be waiting anxiously.

I do have some images. I don't know if they'll be good enough but I think that at least some of them are from the correct perspective. It's a 2 MB zip file. Let me know if you are interested.

Brilliant, just brilliant.
It's way, way, way above my meager skills. But if you do and offer it I'll use it.

Thanks again for your comments.

Ok, hs1611... here is a "crash" work for a 8 cm GrWefer (Fj)... An icon for the needed Fallschirmjager mortar... I hope you like it, and give them some good use!
This icon was made based on the previous work by LuftWFJ44.

:-)

By the way, I will send to you a P.M. with my e-mail, for you to send me the file with the artillery images, and I will see what can be done...

Cheers!

Thank you very much.
Exactly what I wanted but wasn't able to do.
I'll try to do a Gebirgs unit based on this one and post here, if sucessfull.

As for the artillery units, I have sent you my files and hope you can use some, although I'm not sure if any of the images is good enough.
But, if they are and you want to make the units, no hurry on my account. I'm perfectly happy with the mortars.

Thanks again.
