Screen resolution problem

I am running Windows 8 and when I start the game the only screen resolution I am offered is 640 x 480. Playing at this resolution is impossible as the on-screen text is unreadable, even on resetting the monitor resolution to 640 x 480. I've tried various compatibility settings, but all without success. Suggestions please?

I am offered a maximum resolution of 1024x768. I would like 1366x768. also The game defaults to windowed and not full screen every time I run the programe
