Lords of Italy 280 BC - Vicis Secundum

Post by lydianed »

Welcome to a re-run of the excellent Lords of Italy 280 BC run earlier this year by Fogman. This is the return or the Vicis Secundum in my dubious Latin. We have eight players recruited and ready to go.

The conclusion of the Third Samnite War had rendered Rome master of central Italy. In the north -Cisalpine Gaul, powerful Celtic tribes whose ancestors had sacked Rome a century earlier, looked upon Roman expansionism with increasing alarm. In the south, the Greek cities of Magna Graecia felt equally threatened. Over the straights of Messina, the two hundred years conflict for supremacy over Sicily raged on between Carthage and Syracuse. Into the fray entered the shining knight of the Hellenistic world, Pyrrhus, king of Epirus and pretender to the throne of Macedonia. The scene is set for the Lords of Italy (part two...)

Some adjustments are being made to the armies that fought in the previous LoI and the details will appear here in the next 48 hours or so along with the rules of the competition. In keeping with the Lords tradition points aren't scored for wins or draws - games are played just for the enjoyment of it. One key proviso is that players must average at least one turn per day. This keeps the tournament running along at a good pace and importantly keeps everyone involved in games at most times.

The tournament should start by Monday 28th Oct.

COMPETITION RULES

ARMIES: 500 pts from Rise of Rome

Mid Republican Roman 280-203 BC, Later Carthaginian (in Africa)*, Gallic (early Lowland) 400-205BC, Pyrrhic (in Italy).
*this set differs from the pre-235 BC one, the logical choice, mainly by the presence of superior armoured spearmen, which in my opinion should always have been available, and are crucial for the carthaginians to be competitive and indeed more historical.

RESTRICTIONS:

Romans: 4 leaders (1 Inspired, 3 Troop), 45 BG max, no allies
-the number of protected legionaries must be at least twice the number of armoured legionaries (legionaries are hastatii, principes, triarii, penal legionaries)
-only italian auxiliaries (the MF) can be used (no ligurian, illyrian, cretan, spanish, trallian, theorophoi, gallic, numidian, elephant)
- LH + LF = 10 maximum

Pyrrhic: 4 leaders (1 Inspired, 3 Troop) 45 BG max, no allies
-the number of phalanx cannot exceed the combined number of tarantine pikes and hoplites; and the number of tarantine pikes cannot exceed the number of hoplites.
- LH + LF = 10 maximum

Gallic: 4 leaders (1 Inspired, 3 Troop) 45 BG max,
- Hills Tribes allies must be taken.
- the number of HF warriors must be at last twice the number of Gaesati mercenaries.
- LH + LF = 10 maximum (Light chariots do not count here)

Carthage: 4 leaders (1 Inspired, 3 Troop) 45 BG max, no allies
- no Poeni, Ligurian, Campanian, Gallic troops (including Gallic Cavalry) can be taken.
- LH + LF = 10 maximum

It is helpful to start a DAG game with your army to check that all restrictions are met.

GENERAL:

Terrain: VERY OPEN. Both players must choose very open terrain. Whoever wins initiative MUST choose a green map, unless there are no green maps offered.
pitched battles are not fought on weird terrain. ancient generals chose an open plain to do their battle.

NO DOUBLE MOVES. The player putting up the challenge must choose no double move.
double moves can result in some amazing blitzkrieg maneuvers that do not match the ponderous nature of ancient armies.

NO FOG OF WAR. The player putting up the challenge must choose no fog of war.
on a flat terrain, whichever side wins initiative can have the only hill on his side and can see the entire enemy army, an enormous advantage. the unintended consequence is that moves are not permanent (you can use the undo button), which is not a problem.

MIRROR GAMES.
Games are divided into two rounds:
Round 1: each player plays every other players using his army of choice. The player will use the army same composition for all his games (no tailoring).
Round 2: each player will play every other players using his opponents' army from round 1.

ERRORS:
In case a player spots an error in his opponents' army (a restriction that is not followed, too many BGs for example), he can ask his opponents to rebuild or he can acquiesce.

CHALLENGES.
the convenor will determine who should challenge who for each round.

I need your army choices back as soon as you possibly can gents - I've got them back from everyone else so as soon as you send me yours we can get this party started.

The army choices are:

Carthaginian in Africa
Mid Republican Roman (No-one has chosen these as a 1st choice yet... not sure why the poor old Romans are so unpopular)
Gallic (Early Lowland)
Pyrrhic in Italy

Let me have your choices in order of preference numbered 1 to 4.

All armies will be 500pts. See the previous post for army composition details.

Dawn breaks pink and rosy fingered. Nervously, men shuffle into line, exchanging murmured greetings with their fellows. Coils of steam rise from the flanks of the cavalry horses in the cold, morning air. The stillness is suddenly shattered by deep blasts from the horns, answered on all sides by a bellowing, ferocious roar. The war has begun.

First of all the armies
  • kmaher Gallic (Early Lowland)
    iandavidsmith Pyrrhic in Italy
    Greetings44 Carthaginian in Africa
    Cunningcairn Gallic (Early Lowland)
    George123 Carthaginian in Africa
    Ricoual74 Mid Republican Roman
    mcfcivo Mid Republican Roman
    lydianed Pyrrhic in Italy
We play over two rounds. The people to make the challenges in Round 1 are listed below. All players play seven games in each round (so everyone plays everyone else). When all the Round 1 games are complete the matches are played again only with the players swapping armies.

The Round 1 challenges:
kmaher will challenge Cunningcairn, Ricoual74, Greetings 44, George123
iandavidsmith will challenge kmaher, Cunningcairn, George123, lydianed
Greetings44 will challenge Ricoual74, iandavidsmith, lydianed
Cunningcairn will challenge Greetings44, George123, mcfcivo, lydianed
George123 will challenge Ricoual74, Greetings44, mcfcivo
Ricoual74 will challenge Cunningcairn, iandavidsmith, mcfcivo
mcfcivo will challenge kmaher, Greetings44, iandavidsmith
lydianed will challenge kmaher, Ricoual74, George123, mcfcivo

All games are 500pts. Please refer to the army composition rules in the previous post. Armies cannot be tweaked/altered between matches so pick your best all round outfit and stick with it! When making challenges please select VERY OPEN for terrain and make sure Fog Of War and Double Moves are turned OFF. Players accepting challenges should also select VERY OPEN maps. It's a very good idea to pm your opponent when you make a challenge and please remember we're looking for one turn per person per game per day.

This thread is for all challenges, all results and all queries. Everything all in one place. Let's go homies.

Pyrrhic v Carthage 42/42 v42/42

Pyrrhus lived up to his name in a particular bloody encounter. My cavalry rolled over their opposition. Unfortunately the scutarii couldn’t hold off the combine pike and hoplite push long enough. Good matchup between the pikes and the veteran spearmen though. All hinged on the last two turns. I thought I did enough but was lucky not to lose in the end. Thanks to Lydianed for a great game.

Anyone else been caught out by the no double moves rule?

lydianed (Pyrrhic) 34/42 vs Ricoual74 (MRR 38/37)

The Pyrrhic cavalry took on and demolished the Roman right wing and raced to a large lead which then got gradually whittled down once the legions and the pikes met. The legions made quick work of the Pyrrhic MF they found but the pikes proved to be made of sterner stuff. However, the Pyrrhic army really runs out of steam quickly an found it hard to gain the last few points for victory. A good game. Nice not to have faced a Roman army comprised entirely of Armoured Superior HF. Thanks for the game Eric.

Ricoual74 Romans 35/37 beat George123 Carthaginians 42/42.
The fight was really close, and Carthaginians were ahead for most of the battle, but their move to turn around Romans left side didn't succeed as their middle was crushed by legions.
Great battle.
Thanks George123

lydianed (Pyrrrhic) 31/42 vs Greetings44 (Carthies in Africa) 40/38

On a wide open map the pyrrhic cavalry made a mess of the Carthaginian right and then threatened their rear. This caused the Carthaginians to have to face two ways to fight which prevented them from really getting the most out of their Superior Armoured spears. A bruising melee followed with honours equal on both sides. The early gains for the Pyrrhics proved the difference in the end. Thanks for the game.

vrs
Greetings44 (Carthaginian in Africa) 43/38 loss

Close game until the last few turns until the Pyrrhic Pike and Lancers came
around the back of Carthage line of spears. My Left flank was decimated though
by lots of medium foot with impact weapons.I looted the Carthaginian camp and found
a lot of thrilly garments , dresses , whips and bangles , other armies beware being captured

Great game,
Thanks

two results:
draw against Kmaher and his Gallic army, just a bloody battle ;).
Victory against Cunningcairn and his Gallic, romans for once kept their line and destroyed gallic center before their wings collapsed.
