Legion BG's...4 or 6 (or even 8)?

Post by verybizzyb »

Hi

I haven't actually played FoG yet but I'm building a Late Republican Roman army (28mm) and wondered whether to organize my legions in 4 or 6 base Bg's (I think 8 may be too big). Anyone out there who is using/has used this army and able to offer some advice please? My instinct says 4 but without playing it's difficult to decide. :?

There are benefits and negatives to all of those options. You may even have a combination of these sizes within the 1 army.

The best thing is to play a few games and decide which is better for your style of play- there is no magic answer :)

Depends on their quality as well - I don't think I'd really want to use Average in 4's.

Yep its a suck it and see. You will find many decisiosn in FOG are experiential and not that hard to just decide analytically.

FWIW From a game point of view ....

I run mine with an 8 main strikeforce and 4s thereafter.

The 8 is handy as it gives you 1 BG you can put a general with that gives a 4 wide attack point
The 4s are really handy as drilled as they can manouvre well and exploit any holes

I agree,

For me superiors foot should be in 4s or more if armoured, 6s or more if protected.

Average foot 6s for armoured and 8s for protected.

It is to a large degree a matter of personal taste. The big downside to a BG of 4 bases is that once it has lost a base it it permanently at -1 on cohesion tests because of 25% losses. The downside of 6 base superior armoured foot BGs is the cost.

You pays your money and takes your choice.

In my WOR army I had some BGs of 8 superior armoured MAA/billmen and some of 4.

The advantage of 8s is that you get more bang for your buck when you put a general in the front rank, and it is hard for enemy shooters to cause cohesion tests (especially if they don't have longbows). The 4s are useful to keep as reserves and (if placed in column behind the join) can give rear support to 2 BGs of 8.

Another point is that 4, are more usefull in terrain - they can advance in column which means the terrain doesn't slow them as much and after expanding they are all fighting and the disorder only costs them 1 dice.

Superiors in 4's can work well IMO, especially if drilled.
