When exactly units retreat?

Post by Plaid »

Question about retreats (and surrenders). I believed that units retreat when they have all of their remaining strength supressed, but looks like things are more tricky, than it seems.
I've noticed that conscript unit (15 strength) retreated from my panzer III (12 strength) which physically can't kill/supress 15 strength points (only 12 dice rolled). So why and how? Any ideas?

Well don't forget suppression form artillery and/or strat bomber also count in the total so if you'd already used artillery/strat bombers before the attack then its more than possible

Plus scoring kills also causes suppression. I don't know the exact amount caused by each kill (or how many kills it takes to cause 1 extra suppression) but as you can see it is possible for 12 sp to inflict enough kills /suppression on a 15sp unit

Plus 1 other factor in retreats - the defending unit HAS to be reduced to 0 entrenchment before it can be forced to retreat

Thanks for info. Probably I did know about most of it, but additional suppression from kills is something new for me. Yes, it can explain things.

Next time you get such a result press the "L" key to get a look at the detailed combat results....should show the extra suppression

Well, I did. It was something like 9 red rolls (kill), 1 blue (supзress) and 2 white (miss). So technically 5 sp were still unsupressed.

I will make screenshot next time when it occurs and post it here. Plenty of this conscript units in GC'42.

Suppression is cumulative during a turn, then it re-sets.

Did you use an air or artillery attack before the last die roll?

Nope. I attacked 15 steps intact conscript unit with 12 steps panzer III (so normal fire rate - only 12 attack rolls) , and as a result conscript retreated. This is what confused me, but I've seen this for a few times.

Also I believe suppression caused by anything but artillery/strategic bomber disappears right after attack, but again, its not the case in my example, since I did not use any support at all.

I think this is true, thank you for information!

This time attacked with flamer panzer, killed 11 steps and (technically) suppressed only 2, but actual suppression was 4 and unit retreated.
