problem with reinstalling 1.12 - can't write to hard drive?

In the process of trying to get 3.0 to work I decided to reinstall 1.12. Now it isn't working either. (bad move, obviously)

After the screen where it asks for graphics quality, and a brief flicker for the intro movie (which I have disabled) I get a message saying "Please copy the game to a location on your hard drive that you are allowed to writ..." The end of the error message doesn't quite fit but the meaning seems clear.

What on earth is going on? How can I fix this?

I am installing from a file called CEaW_Full_GS_2.0.exe, under WinXP, and saying no when the installer asks to install GS.

Odder still - if I DO install GS 2.0, it works. Will try with 3.0 and see what happens...

3.0 also works. So never mind. If it ain't broke don't fix it - I wasn't planning to play the vanilla game anyway
