Thought for upgrading across unit type

Post by brettz123 »

I am hoping that in Panzer Corps 2 they will allow certain units to upgrade to different unit classes. The one I would really like to see is being able to upgrade self-propelled tank destroyers to tanks and vice versa. I would also like to see Me-110s upgradeable to fighters as I think it fits with the use of the Me-110 during the war.

Does anyone else think this is a useful idea?

Can Be Good and Bad I Like the upgrade system or maybe do it for elite units only and is it possible to have fighters and bombers as elite units at the min?

Personally I'd like this but only I certain variants. Exp The SIG 33 in some cases had its gun removed to make room for infantry to ride into battle. Something like that. Even Shermans had this done to them for Infantry purposes. If an ME-110 was fitted with rockets/bombs I'd have great effect against ground targets, but would suffer in dogfights.

Much better examples would be: Upgrade a Flak8.8 to a different anti tank gun, upgrade Kradschützen and cavalry to recon units

IMHO motorcycle and cavalry units should be switchable (infantry/recon) by default, since they performed both duties in real life. And yes, I have often found myself wishing that switchable units could be upgraded as either unit type, though I haven't thought through the balancing problems that might pose.

Should only be allowed once a scenario. To balance it out a bit.

I don't see any balancing problems at all. Why would it be an issue if the upgrade was always a full-price-out-of-family upgrade? The only thing that might be a problem would be unit specific heroes. Like a Flak can have a range hero, a anti tank unit can't. But honestly, the player would just have to live with having a worthless hero then. After all the hero isn't worth shit in the switched mode either. Especially Kradschützen are just not worth having if you can't upgrade them into something usefull later on.

I agree with KeldorKatarn. I don't really see any balance issues if you pay for it. And some out of family upgrades seem fairly reasonable. I think good examples would be:

Kradshutzen and Cavalry --> Recon
Recon --> Light Tanks
Self Propelled Anti-Tank (StuGs, Marders, etc....) --> tanks
88s --> full blown anti-tank
Me-110 --> fighters

I am sure if we think about it there are more.

i wouldn't overdo this. but the switchable units and certainly some recon units are definately an issue. i would be using Cavalry and Kradschützen more if I didn't know that by late 1941 both of them are completely useless since I cannot upgrade them.

I’m no fan of switchable infantry units either and removed the infantry mode of the LRDG and Sahariana units. If their vehicles can’t pass a certain terrain, then it would be cheating if switching back from feet to wheels afterwards. Also, a turn in the game is often one day and you hardly need a day to jump off your Krad, horse, whatever. 1-2 point less in GD and AD is fine enough for me as balance. For close defense, the mounts may be out of reach in close terrain, because the infantry already dismounted before.

The Krads(chützen) were rather replaced later in 1943 with Kübelwagen and Schwimmwagen. Too bad no one has created proper icons for these yet. Meanwhile, I also created a 43er version of the krads and cavalry units.
