Tripod of the Hoplon, a hoplite mini-tournament

Post by the_iron_duke »

I'm looking for two well-experienced FoG players with a passion for hoplite warfare to participate in an early Hoplite mini-tournament. It really is mini, with only three players, three armies, three games in total and two games for each player.

The competing armies are the three hoplite armies from the earlier 700-451 BC period in the Immortal Fire Army List:

Early Hoplite Greek
Classical Spartan
Early Colonial Greek

They are an interesting trio of armies and I think work well for a mini-tournament. The Colonial Greek army represents quantity, the Spartan army exemplifies quality and the regular Hoplite Greek army is a balance between the two.

Competition Format

The tournament is a mini-league for three players who will play one game against each of the other two opponents. So there will be two games played by each player and three games occuring in total in the tournament.

Since there is an odd number of players, all three tournament matches will commence and occur simultaneously.

Army Allocation

The players will get to choose which army they use according to their game experience, with the more experienced players having less choice of army.

If any players have participated in the LoEG and have a rating of 3.0 or greater they will be ranked according to their score. This page has the LoEG rankings:

viewtopic.php?f=113&t=41385

I haven't participated in the LoEG but will take an arbitrary score of 4.0 for the ranking purposes of this tournament.

Any remaining players will be assigned a number randomly.

The participants will then choose their army in order of their assigned ranking, with player 3 (lowest ranked) choosing first and player 1 (highest ranked) last.

Alternatively, and if both of the other two participating players give support, the armies can be allocated randomly.

Scoring and Victory Conditions

In the league there will be 2 points for a Decisive Victory, 1.5 points for a Marginal Victory and 1 point for a Draw. The player with the most points at the end of play is the tournament winner.

If points are equal between two armies at the end of play, the winner of the head-to-head between those armies will win the tournament. If that was a draw then whoever inflicted the greatest BP percentage damage in that head-to-head will win. If that is also equal then whoever recorded a better BP score ratio in their other game will win. If that is also equal then it will be decided by a single round of scissors, paper, stone.

Rules of Engagement

Battles are to be fought at 500 pts with Fog-of-War and Double-moves on.

No allies are allowed for any army.

Green or arid maps may be used.

The only special rules concern the Spartans who, unlike the other two armies, have greater choice in the type of hoplite they have available for selection in the Army List. In order to conform to the quality v quantity tactical theme of the tournament, the Spartans are required to maximise their hoplite quality.

In practise, this means they must field 17 or 18 of the 18 superior Spartan citizens that are available for a 500 pt game. All additional Spartan hoplites utilised must be drilled perioikoi rather than undrilled subject hoplites.

I'm taking a break from the game so I'm standing this down. Thanks, batesmotel, for your interest.
