Air war over Russia this Saturday-if you are near Seattle...

Post by Kamerer »

If anyone is near Seattle, I thought I'd point out the local FW-190 and IL-2 are flying this Saturday, weather permitting. Pretty rare and interesting stuff:

I have been looking forward for a long time to see taht Shturmovik fly. I'll be there with friends and tots in tow.

On a related note, I have been on numerous business trips the last two years to Samara, Russia, on the Volga River. It was called Kubishev during the war. The majority of IL-2's and all IL-2 engines were built in Samara/Kubishev. To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII, a group of companies in Samara will be restoring an airframe and original engine for flight for the anniversary. Part of the company I am involved with for business built the engines back in the war and I believe have identified a rebuildable engine that they will rebuild. Hope to be able to see it fly myself.

Yep, that plane was made in Kubishev. It was pulled out of a lake near Murmansk in the '90s and got parts from several other wrecks. Very neat you are involved in a similar project.
