Couple of Painting Tips Needed

Post by Eques »

(1) How do people add shading to white tunics? Whenever I try (either with washes or layering) they just end up looking like they need a trip to the launderette.

(2) How can I add definition to the Roman Lorica Segmentata Armour (28mm)?

Thanks

1 paint the white tunics very light grey. Add a bit of black to make the folds darker, but water this right down. Use pure white to do the highlights.

2- paint the plates dark gunmetal (add some black). Do a fairly thick dry brush over that with standard gunmetal. Do a light dry brush over that with a bright silver.

Hope this helps

Yeah, white and yellow suck as colours to work with. My experience has shown that making them SEEM white but actually being grey is the best bet.

For example, take a look at a photograph of a person wearing a white shirt or dress. Zoom RIGHT in so that you can see the pixels. Very few of them will be white. Even in something like a wedding dress I think you'll find that true.

The other advantage of the 'almost white' is that you can use titanium white to bring out hilites to make them pop. For example, if you were doing Napoleonic Austrians, you can do the uniform a 'less white' kind of white, and have the cross belts etc titanium white to make them stand out.

Remember to water down your hilites and darker shades to a very light consistency and draw off most of the paint in blotting paper so you onlu apply the paint where you want it to go.

Be patient.

Another tool I find really useful is Youtube. Just search around. You'll find most will be Warhammer 'how to paint Blood hawk dark angels space marines' or some such, but the techniques are solid, so you've got to find WHICH chapter of the Warhammer works for what you are trying to do. The methods someone uses to paint a bolt-gun (for example) may be perfect for the Lorica Segmentata. Naturally you'll have to adapt some of it, but it will help you learn to work the paints.

Thanks all.

Am just starting on the second legionary now so will try RF's method (on the first one I just painted it silver, applied a black wash, then painted silver over the bands again, worked quite well)

For whites, I find Payne's Grey ink (made by Daler-Rowney) is excellent. After washing you end up with a pale grey with dark grey creases.
Highlight with white, and it looks great.

Thanks.

Have never used inks before. Do you cover the whole tunic with it? What do you use as a wash?

Eques - the ink is used as the wash. I've also used grey ink over white base to get a good white effect. Depending on the brand of ink, you may need to water it down.

To clarify:
Paint tunic solid white (actually, off-white usually looks better than pure white)
Let it dry
Wash with slightly diluted Payne's Grey ink
Let it dry
Highlight with the original white

Thanks all.

That's pretty much what I do already but with GW Nuln Oil as the wash, with decidedly mixed results. Will the ink do any better?
