Darsnan's Journal

Post by Darsnan »

Game setup:
Build: 0.21.0
Faction: Terra Salvum
Medium World/ Continents/ Easy/ Low Aggression/ Average world settings

Observations:
1. Experienced my first update the other night: no issues with download.
2. I'm finding that I have to re-learn my early game strategies: the approaches I developed in SMACX and Deadlock do not apply here! I'm getting my butt kicked repeatedly in the early game because I'm not dedicating enough resources to defense. I've even had AIs from other continents sail units over and conquer my cities! Bah! :x
3. Haven't figured out a good tech beeline to date. Currently I first go towards Mineral enhancing techs, then to "Naval Transportation Logistics" so I can start exploring Sea Ruins. Then I head towards Humanoid War Machines so I can build Mechs.
4. Aircraft versus naval units for exploration: I'm finding using aircraft to explore is much better than naval units, as aircraft have the option of moving onto land to escape enemy units.
5. How soon do people build their first Colonizer? I'm finding if I crank one out too early, that I lose the resulting city to AI aggression.
6. A tactic I have developed is that I will plan my base placement such that I can use a Hive as a defensive position: by placing the Hive between myself and the AI, then the AI needs to either go around or thru the Hive. Anyone else have any experience with this tactic?
7. Finally conquered my first base! Tactic I used was to declare war, let the AI come to me and beat himself to death on my defenses, then I went over to the offensive against his depleted forces. Once I conquered the base it was interesting to see the buildings the AI had built - I like to see what the AI is up to in the games I play. Question: is there any way to crack open a game and view each of the AIs' (a la the Scenario Generator option in SMACX)?
8. Windowed mode! Thanx Canute! :b:

Game setup:
Build: 0.21.0
Faction: Terra Salvum
Medium World/ Continents/ Easy/ Low Aggression/ Average world settings
Gamesave: 9_15b

Given the above game setup I've developed a strategy that is serving me well, as follows:

1. Determine the location of the AI on the shared continent and build a string of cities towards the AIs location:
The strategy.jpg
The strategy.jpg (197.22 KiB) Viewed 1413 times
2. Build Adaptive Bunkers in the forward cities and garrison the cities with units having the defensive tweak.
3. I've found that after the event where the native lifeforms become aggressive and attack everything in site, that this discountenances the AI significantly, and that this is the ideal time to declare war on the AIs. The AIs are then like moths to a flame, as they will send all available units to attack my well established positions. Observation: the AI separated his forces and attacked two cities (instead of concentrating on one). I think it would have been more of a threat if the AI had focused all available resources to home in on one target, instead of dividing their attack formations into two weaker forces.
4. Once the AI has exhausted himself attacking my defenses, I move my stack of doom (SOD) towards the targeted city and conquer it:

Observation: I could immediately put this city to work for me producing units to replenish those lost in the attacks/ counterattacks on this city. This is a huge boon to a momentum player!

Observation: when I moved my SOD south to attack the next city, the AI moved a majority of his originally garrisoned forces around my SOD and re-took the original city:

Interesting side effect of my continued advancement: another AI attacked the weakened target AI and took one of the targeted AI's southern cities (can't attach photo as 3 attachments is the limit)

Other observations: minor bug in that playing as Terra Salvum I see that I get two minerals per planted forest, however the tooltip for Formers says that the planted forest only yields one mineral.

Next game I'll increase the difficult level and see how well my strategies work!

Game setup:
Build: 0.22.0 (First game with new build)
Faction: Terra Salvum
Medium World/ Continents/ Medium/ Low Aggression/ Average world settings

Observations:

1. Minor graphical bug:
Graphics bug.jpg
Graphics bug.jpg (97.86 KiB) Viewed 1398 times
2. First 3 Ruins I explored in this first game produced Credits which then put me into position to purchase a Refining Array, which was significant in regards to my starting location bonus of a Noxium Field, as then boosting Workers I was able to expedite production of my first Colonizer, which I have already identified as a viable Victory beeline/ approach.

3. An unintended/ unidentified side effect of the above approach is that I need to produce more Formers in order to really take advantage of being able to crank out Colonizers in the early game. This takes away from my early focus on military unit production. An interesting decision matrix, which considering the various world environments will definitely force me to consider my decision matrix! :b:

4. Sea Ruins: Any thoughts to giving an aquatic version of Xenomorph Drones as a reward? I ask this because in SMACX, CIV, and Deadlock it seemed that aquatic worlds (i.e. game maps with +75% water surface) were neglected in this sense. Or to put it slightly differently, "busy" shipping lanes means for a more interesting game!

5. What are the real advantages of a Seeker ATV?

I can wait for more heavy-adept mobility capability in the early game till I get to "Heavy War Machines", which gives me tanks. Between this and the 2 movement point capability of the Colonial Trooper chassis why I don't see the real benefits of focusing on the Seeker ATV.

5. What are the real advantages of a Seeker ATV?
Higher movement + ability to mount hvy weapons.
Ideal to attack artilery before you come into range, special when they are stationed at forest/mountains.

But you are right, the ATV should have more movement, or maybe a terrain movement bonus on easy terrain.
Or maybe the ability to move after an attack.
