Alexandrian and Seleucids
Hiya guys
Quick figure question, How similar were these troops in uniforms etc as im leaning towards maybe a Seleucid army and really like the look of Xyston figures from their Alexandrian range. Would these figures fit?

Probably - what period of the Selecids are you looking at? early - no worries. But for the later (ie the chaps in Rise of Rome) you would need to look elsewhere for a number of your troops - the Cataphracts, for instance. The Later elephants wouls also need to be sourced from somewhere else - they would have towers & (quite possibly) armour.
Dunno when/if Xyston are going t odo the later Seleucid stuff - they seem to have had abig delay of late.

Seleucids
I have a later seleucid army that is from Xyston wherever possible. For elephants I recommend irregular miniatures and/or gladiator. I have one of each.

I used standard alexandrian pike and xyston seleucid pike to distinguish between the average and superior chaps. Bascially towards the latter period the seleucids descended into barbaric pants-wearing behoviour.
hence:
later companions and agema
ANC20125-'Persian' Xystophoroi
later pike
ANC20107-Pantodapoi Phalangites

expendablecinc, Thats a nice looking army you have there mate
and you have also given me a nice look at what some of the Xyston figs paint up like, very nice ....
So I took the plunge and ordered a couple bags of cav and a few more bags of pike to get me started, some of the other stuff can be borrowed in mean time form all the different armies the guys have here at the moment as I start expanding them.
cheers

It's a long time since I researched and painted my Ptolemies, but the situation then seemed to be there was no evidence for pikemen in chainmail. Needless to say, I found this out just *after* painting a batch of old Minifigs phalangites wearing...you guessed it...willb wrote:there is also mention of them wearing chainmail in the later period
The idea seemed to be that by the time chainmail was becoming widespread, most hellenistic armies were moving to peltasts as their main foot type - hence the switch from Thureophoroi to Thorakitai.
That all may be out of date or just plain wrong, tho
Very nicely painted army, BTW.

Well figs arrived today from Xyston, not too bad, thou 1 of the pikeman poses has a bit of a miscast alignment issue and needs some filing and trimming to fix up. Ordered after the rules were notified as sent from amazon, still no books....
Anyone have any good websites as to what coloring to paint them all up as?
cheers
