Lot of steam on this one.
Though I'm with Don....We prefer phasing player rolls 1st then the non-phasing player.

My pet hate is rolling dice into a bunch of other dice .
cheers

"I am not very happy for my opponent to have some dice with symbols on the 1 and some with symbols on the 6!
" this came up in my game with rbs at britcon. I fully accepted the point and removed the dice.

i only use FOW symbol dice (6 being a divisional logo) as my collection of "retro" dice is limited. Although i have fixed this with nice "extra retro" wooden dice.
when a symbol did come up, it do show the reverse to confirm it is a six. I do get the "BAD" dice argument.
next target is to find a rolling cup big enough. Rbs also explained his thoughts on hand rolled dice. Which he did stress players took the bad rerolls with the good ones. I now roll from my side to their side :)

So I try to have the habit of putting the dice I think are hits behind my unit. That way my opponent can check them. Two sets of eyes are better than one! One of my oponents commonest mistakes, I think, is to forget when their units are superior - I think I quite often remind people "don't forget to re-roll your 1s". So it works both ways - and it is easier for everyone to take part if dice are clearly readable from a distance.
Which is why I prefer for the phasing player to roll first, check, then the other player rolls. Two pairs of eyes definitely helps.
I think if you have a big line of combats it adds to the fun if one player rolls then the other. On the other hand it does take longer so could eat into game time.

My Pirates will continue to use their Pirate dice, with Skulls and Crossbones instead of the "1".

I only see the need to change if I ever manage to find something a little more "Pirate-ey" ...
