Terrain Placement question

Post by Martin0112 »

I have a question for terrain placement
When rollig a 3 or 4, the terrain piece has to touch the opponents or my own side edge.
Nothing is said on the topic, that the terrain piece has to touch the opponents side edge, but can be partly in my own side (or the other way round)
Even more, in my eyes it should be OK if it touches both side edges, as the rule says, it has to touch opponents side edge, but it is not saying it is not allowed to touch my own side edge.
Otherwise I would expect something in the rules like 'touching opponents side edge and is entirely in opponents half'

Is this the right interpretation?

Well, I've only ever played it that it is entirely on one side or another.

I think this was discussed a lot in V1.

I'd say in a friendly game you'd quickly be without friends. In a competition... well... you'd probably be strictly speaking correct, but a judge would probably rule against you.

Yes, this has been debated before. The wording is in the form of Touching X edge - own/opponent's half. These are two separate requirements and you have to abide by both.

Interesting, the wording on page 149 in V2 is essentially the same as in V1. They both say, "... --own half." or ",,, --opponent's half." But on the Game Set Up chart on the last (unnumbered) page in the book it says "... in your own half." (Ditto opponent's). Sounds like the authors do want the terrain placement to be wholly in whichever half is called for.

This has been discussed before Martin.

RBS has previously confirmed that the intent is for the piece to be entirely in yours or the opponents half of the table on a 3 or a 4.

Check out the diagram on page 154 - I believe this should give any umpire sufficient comfort that a terrain piece should be placed entirely within one side of the table or the other.

Well, I ask because somebody on Britcon (and I really forgot who was it told me, it must NOT be entirely in the half. Thanks for clarifying this

I've heard of people trying this, but I've never seen it. It is very 'gamey' and hopefully an umpire would agree.

Sadly the wording can be interpreted in either way but I think the diagram on page 154 makes it clear.

This topic came up on this forum in October 2011 (sorry, I don't know how to copy links to previous threads).

Nik and Hammy were accused of cheesemongering at Derby (or some such). Following a debate Nik confessed that he did, indeed, own a cheese knife (more of a trowel) and threw himself on the mercy of the court. All concluded (and author Simon Hall was quoted as confirming) that terrain placed on a side edge must initially be placed wholly inside the relevant half of the board. Despite a request for tidying up the wording in v2 it was concluded that changes to terrain rules were outside the scope of the v2 amendments.
